Review of Stedman's Surinam
I selected this book due to my genealogy connecting me to this Stedman family. The book enabled me to learn about the author personally plus gave more genealogy with his family noted, but also was quite enlightening about life during slavery times in the British-held possessions....It gave horrible ancedotes of the severity treatment and cruelty to others. Although this treatment cannot be denied, within those times true love was discovered between the races which was much more difficult to profess a love between a slave and British officer. His love also was shown when he later returned to England but sent for his Surinam-born son against the feelings of his other children. The book was quite good, giving intimate historical information as well as genealogical information.
