Robin Son of Batman 1: Year of Blood

Year of the New Robin
As far as Robins go, I was always a Tim Drake kind of guy. Grayson was ok, but grew more as a solo act; Jason Todd was too childish and wild to be a sidekick. But Damian? Completely arrogant, spoiled and detached from a 'normal' life. And for some strange reason...I begrudgingly began to like him.Year of Blood gives a bit of insight as to what his training with Talia and the League of Assassins was like, and his overall attitude before being raised by Batman to be become a protector, instead of killer. The story is interwoven between past and present as he tries to atone for various wrongdoings under Talia's tutelage and his inner struggle to figure out who he is and what it means to be Robin. My exposure to Damian was fairly limited; various website excerpts, a bit of comic talk among friends. It wasn't until DC's animated films (Son of Batman & Batman vs. Robin), and the wonderfully done Batman & Robin run done by Grant Morrison, that I really got to see what he was like - a weird, yet wonderful blend of Grayson's acrobatics, Jason's brutality, Drake's smarts, Batman's determination and a whole lot of arrogance.Patrick Gleason's Robin had that same energy and feel that I got from the DC animated version, which I love. I also like the fact that Gleason and Mick Gray's art/ink combination is highly appealing and it makes Damian actually look like a kid.Definitely worth your time if you're just getting into the New 52 version of Batman or a fan of the new Robin.

Wow. You know, there was a time when I hated the character Damian more than one should hate a fictional anti-hero.The writers at DC have done some impressive work with him. Snyder was the turning point for me. And he convinced me to read the Tomasi Batman & Robin title which had some more touching scenes than I'd ever expected. And now we have the traditional "redemption arc" story. Only, I don't think this works without having read the other titles. So, I benefited A LOT from having the history before picking up this volume.Goliath felt too gimmicky right up until he wasn't. And when it all comes together at the end of the volume...seriously amazing work. And knowing this character is just now turning 13 for the Rebirth new stories. But for this story...I seriously commend Patrick Gleason on his writing. The art was hit or miss for me sometimes, but that's a personal thing. I think the story, the dialogue, the writing was something special. So much so...I'll keep an eye out for Gleason's name in the future almost as much as I'll keep an eye out for Volume Two of this title.

This is making Damian better than he already is.
So, I decided to get this because I wanted a new graphic novel and my first choice was super sons rebirth vol 1 but it was not coming out until October. So I got this because I was curious after seeing it in Barnes and noble. and I actually ended up liking this better than batman beyond.(the New fifty two version) so the point of the story is that Damian is trying to redeem himself for the terrible things his mom made him do during the year of blood. And I admit that I find the stories surrounding robin (nightwing, red robin, e.c.t) more interesting than batman. (Crazy right?) it is nice to have a standalone robin story where batman barely even appeares (not counting nightwing or the others) where Damian can be the hero of his own story without batman's guidance. And I also admit that Damian is one of my favorite robins. Probably 2nd best after dick Grayson. And this story is perfect opportunity for Damian to develop as a character after his death in batman incorporated. and to face his demons. (No pun intended) and Goliath is totally awesome btw.

Damian Wayne's New Path
I was bummed out after the new 52 Batman and Robin because I wanted to know what happened to Robin and to Robin's Mom because the new 52 (VOL 7) ended with a cliffhanger. Then BAM! This novel came out and it's a sequel to the New 52 which is Awesometacular. I really enjoyed it, it's different because it's more of Damian's background which I'm not really formilar with which was pretty cool to read. I liked the other character they introduced (no spoilers lol) if you enjoyed the New 52 Batmand and Robin, you will enjoy this. The artwork is great btw.

A Look into the Son of Batman's Heart
A truly deeper look into the Son of Batman and who he was as Damian al Ghul, and who he is now as Damian Wayne. Going further than any other tale about Damian, this is one of the best and heartfelt stories pertaining to the new Boy Wonder and had me reading from front-to-back. I wasn't 2 issues in when I went ahead and ordered the second volume (which is just as good, if not better). This tale picks up shortly after Damian's resurrection in the New 52, and goes from Past-to-Present as Damian attempts to atone for his sins, aka The Year of Blood.

The graphics in this book are just fantastic. Gleason really does a great job not only with the illustrations but also the story is very moving. Damian really grows as a character in this series and I'm really sad it didn't go on further, at least we can continue Damian Waynes story in Super Sons(Which is also very good). This story bring Talia Al Ghul back into the storyline after her death in Batman Incorporated. Great buy, highly recommend.
