It's a Baofeng
It's the exact same radio as my uv-5r. Only difference is its red and I can charge it without a base. Still just as good as the uv-5r.

Redesign of the UV-5R, and comes with the better battery
So I got the UV-S9 to check how similar it is to the UV-5R. The various descriptions and reviews made it sound like a totally different radio, which they could be given Baofeng's model naming. While I like the UV-5R, it requires the cradle to charge out of the box. You can get different batteries for the UV5R to support Alkaline batteries or USB charging, but that is extra. In the case of the UV-S9+, it comes USB charging capable right out of the box and the battery happens to have a bit more capacity at 2200mAh. I don't think the USB cable comes with it, though mine did as part of the package. A couple other things to note: The volume knob seems to have more resistance making it harder to adjust the volume. This is probably a good thing vs. accidentally turning it down or up on the UV5R. The antenna's are not compatible between models. While the post is the same, the UV-S9+ has recessed the antenna a bit so the UV-5R antenna does not seat properly. They both appear to use the same pin-style accessories such as programming cable, headset, etc., though I haven't actually tried my programming cable on the S9+ yet.If you are not looking for any of these features in a UV5R form, then you don't need the S9+ but they aren't much different in price. There are more accessories for the UV5R series, but if you are just looking for that handheld for emergencies or out away from everything, I think the UV-S9+ makes a good alternative to the UV5R as you don't need alternate batteries to make charging easier. It also keeps the same form factor as the UV5R without the extra two inches of added battery to get the USB chargeable batt.

Great radios for the budget or starter kid
I bought a 2 pack set of this radios, So far they are working great, I connected them to several repeaters on GMRS and 2 METERS (ham) and they work perfect. I bought a couple of Abree CS Tactical ANTENNAS AND THEY WORK SUPER GREAT.

You get what you pay for.
This was purchased mostly to monitor some local public safety channels, have a portable marine VHF, and talk on some private frequencies.Programming it by hand is nearly impossible as the menu layouts and keys aren't very intuitive. It's very much worth spending the $8 or $10 dollars for the programming cable and using CHIRP (free) software to program it and adjust settings. So far, the sound quality has been okay but not great. Receiving audio from the public safety frequencies is decent but, a two-way conversation with another BaoFeng is kind of poor. However, it's really to be expected at this price-point. There's a reason this radio costs about $30 and a "real" public safety grade radio can be several hundred to several thousand dollars. The battery, when just monitoring channels will go all day.Overall, for my purposes, I'd get another if this one kicks the bucket.

One of the best GMRS radios you can buy.
I've tested many GMRS radios over the years and this is my favorite. My second is the Radioddity GM-30 GMRS. During our test, we found the BaoFeng UV-S9 can transmit about 4 miles when one was inside an automobile and the other was inside a home in Orlando, Florida in simplex mode. When both radios are outside we got about 6 miles. It works with repeaters as well. We used Chirp to program the radios. It came with about 5 channels that I deleted and put in the GMRS frequencies with no issues at all. It comes with a charger and standard Antenna along with the Whip Antenna. I suggest you use the Whip Antenna. We found that we got double the signal with the whip. An incredible bargain for what you get.
