Very helpful for Parkinson’s patient
This has been great for my husband with Parkinson’s disease. It helps him to move in bed and is very steady for him to hold when he gets up. We have two twin mattresses and box springs in our king bed frame. The belt wraps around the box spring.

Well made, easy install & use. Adjustable beds, or beds which enclose the mattress or box spring, may be problematic.
This is a simple and effective, but short (16-inch long), pivoting bed rail with an easy to use latch. It is pretty easy to install & use, although there may be some complications on some adjustable beds. It may not work on beds which enclose the box spring or mattress. On my father’s Original Mattress Factory adjustable bed the product works reasonably well as long as the head of the bed is not raised too high. The pivot point of the rail can be either on the left or right.I purchased this from Body-n-Home through Amazon and the item was delivered in reasonable time. Before buying you might want to look at the manufacturer’s webpage for this product. Go to HealthCraftProducts dot com. Click on “At Home Products” then click “Smart-Rail.” There you’ll find better pictures than Amazon’s and you can download the PDF installation instructions. Via Amazon Body-n-Home also sells leg extenders that raise the rail 3 inches higher if needed for a taller bed. Also check the Product Description at Amazon for important details. The product was made in Canada and seems well made and strong enough for people of normal weight. The product has a steel H-shaped frame that slides between the mattress and box spring or between the mattress & underlying base on an adjustable bed. A safety strap is included to anchor the H-shaped frame to the bed frame on the opposite side from the rail. In the end the weight of the mattress and occupant and the safety strap keep the railing and its frame in place. The upside down U-shaped railing itself then slides into a hole in one end of the H-shaped frame while a simple latch on the other end keeps the railing in place when sleeping. To get in or out of bed you just lift the rail to release the latch and then pivot the railing out of the way. Note that by flipping the H-shaped frame upside down you can change the side of the frame from which the railing pivots. The only complication in assembly is that it may be necessary to move or remove the mattress in order to anchor the H-shaped frame to the bed frame with the safety strap. I had to lie down on the floor to reach under the bed to wrap the strap around one of the bed frame members. Some users may want to not use the safety strap.

I bought this for an elderly person and attached it to her bed to keep her in bed after numerous falls out of bed. She is now trained to move in and out of bed around it to keep it in place since she does not try to move it herself at night because it snags on the carpet and makes it kind of hard to move. For her use I think that is a good thing. She has dementia and was unaware why she had fallen out of bed many times before. It keeps her aware that she is close to the edge of the bed and it gives her a support to grab onto when she pushes herself out of bed or when she is trying to maneuver herself on the bed after laying down.

Choose with care
This bed rail would be very useful, however our problem was that it would not work with our bed which has wood sideboards and the head raises and lowers. It is hard to explain, but the mattress and box springs meet about an inch below the sides, so could not fit the rail between them. Also, when raising the head, the whole thing tilts & legs get caught on the floor. The BIG problem was in trying to return it. It was shipped thru Vitality Medical and their instructions for return would cost $60! The cheapest rate I have been able to find (through a friend's business) is $40. I called Vitality, but they offered no solution. lesson learned.

Hold on tight.....
Have to be careful when holding on to this bedrail as it moves (pivots) easily. You could lose your footing and fall like I did. It is tied down to my bed frame so remains stable on the bed. (Doesn't shift between mattresses.) Swinging bar is the scary part-It doesn't give the user a good sense of stability upon standing and holding on. I needed mine because I suffered a stroke that robbed me of my left side use. I needed something to support my left side.

Tried using it, but maybe because we have carpeting in the bedroom, the pivoting rail was to unstable for my husband to use. Also, he is in a hospital type bed and the rail restricted the head of the bed from moving up.

Great for Getting in and out of bed...
Best thing ever. Husband has back and leg issues due to polio and this provides secure assistance to get out of bed. Even his in-home Physical Therapist liked it. She had never seen one like this before (one that pivots).
