Roots for Kids: A Genealogy Guide for Young People. 3rd Edition
J**O
The birth of a professional genealogist...
*The description doesn't indicate the age range for this book which is roughly 6th grade (age 11) and up.*This was the book I picked up from my local library over 30 years ago that got me started in genealogy. I purchased the newest edition to see how it was updated and I'd still recommend this book.If you're buying this for an aspiring young genealogist, realize they probably need to have an interest in doing genealogy for this book to appeal to them. I was in fourth grade when I used it so it can work for elementary children but I actually wouldn't have started my kids with this book at that age. The child's interest in learning to do genealogy makes the biggest difference. This book is ideal as a text book if you are teaching a class to the intended age group. I'd even recommend this to adults getting started so it is geared to an older mindset (not young children). Check out Susan's book aimed at younger kids if that's more appropriate (Roots for Kids: Finding Your Family Stories).Recognize this book is for someone looking to learn to do solid (U.S.) genealogy research. It isn't a speed-guide to searching online sites and is probably too much if you're only trying to help your kid finish a school assignment. If instead you have a young person that wants to discover their family tree and is willing to take their time (I'm still at it several decades later), this is a solid place to start so they aren't chasing erroneous branches they culled from the internet when they could be uncovering their actual ancestors with time-tested research strategies.
