It's a magnet.
It's simply a magnet that sticks onto the oil filter. It's held up so far. I'd like to see it made out of a thicker more firm material.

I'm pretty sure it would have ripped right out
Not impressed. See attached image for how it looks after some 10k miles later. This item shouldn't be a "consumable" item, but the quality of it does turn it into such. The rubber has turned very, very soft and elastic, and it basically was peeling off the magnet while trying to remove it after two oil changes. If I hadn't lifted the item by the magnet directly, I'm pretty sure it would have ripped right out. Regarding the magnets strength, it's adequate, no more nor less. I wouldn't call it impressive, but I wouldn't expect it to fall off either. I purchased this item put off by the 50$ price tag on comparable quality products, but this doesn't seem to be the great deal I expected to be. Considering that in best cases an oil filter is more of a "feel good accessory" more than an actual need (Consider it, if a magnet like this is actually going to save your engine, you've got bigger things to worry about), I can't call myself impressed. As of now, I think I'll simply pass on oil filter magnets. And regarding magnetic oil drain bolts, I'm much, much happier with the convenience offered by EZ Oil Drain valves.Would it be nice to have a magnetic oil filter? Sure. Is it necessary? By absolutely no means. Is this the solution proactive car enthusiasts are looking for? Sadly, I doubt it. Although I have to admit that brand new it looked like a nifty little item.

Magnet is Weak and Silicon Rubber Melted
Magnet is Weak and Silicon Rubber Melted from normal day-to-day driving. The melted rubber left a mess on my underbody paneling. I DO NOT recommend buying this product for use!!!!
