The Hazy Moon of Enlightenment: Part of the On Zen Practice collection

The stunning news here is that the long out-of-print Quest Pocket Book gem, "An Experience of Enlightenment" by Flora Courtois is freshly available as the final section of this book. The original edition of "An Experience of Enlightenment" was a tiny palm-sized paperback that sold for $4.50 back in the late eighties or early nineties. I stumbled upon my own diminutive copy by the checkout counter of World Wide News, about ten feet from the voluminous porn rack, with which I had some familiarity. All is of a piece.For beauty, clarity and simplicity, the late Flora Courtois' first-hand report of her awakening is to my knowledge rivaled only by a few much shorter accounts of enlightenment tucked into the middle of the late Roshi Philip Kapleau's "Three Pillars of Zen."One is ever warned against vicarious substitution of the experiences of others for the ever-present possibility of one's own satoris or kenshos. Such experiences apparently lead utterly beyond the personal toward deeper and deeper enlightenment, beyond mere accumulation of 'knowledge' toward a deeply incontrovertible *knowing* that there is no reason not to love all that is. Flora Courtois points in a direction which, when taken seriously, will alter one's outlook and sooner or later one's [email protected]

A superb book by a great master. Good for those new to Zen or to anyone looking for lessons from one of the First Wave of Japanese Zen Masters to spread the Dharma in the US and western world.

Anyone who is on this path without a teacher should read this. The most illuminating book on enlightenment I have read thus far.

The section by Flora Courtois is incredibly profound and inspiring. I don't use the word profound lightly here. She gives a vivid description of a genuine experience of awakening.
