an extraordinary director
Humbling to see the humanity of these characters in circumstances barely imaginable by the Sated and Comfortable. The latters' humanity is nevertheless more questionable even in their present circumstances. This is not a film to feel well about yourself for any reasons whatsoever, but rather a film reminding you which moral measures you wanted to apply to others and the world when you were young, if you have ever been young, if you ever had ideals.

Visually & Emotionally Compelling, Stunning Acting
A masterpiece for anyone interested in life for Russians recovering from WWII, both understated and potent.Visually stunning, visceral details convey the homespun, endlessly repaired, shabbiness of much of domestic life, the humanity of medical life, while also communicating a vibrant sense of life force just below the surface. I needed lots of wine & snacks to see me through the rawness. Looking forward to this director's next films.

Absolutely brilliant film
We need english subtitles but none appeared so can’t watch this! English subtitles were listed on credits. Now we found subtitles and this film is wonderful and really special. Incredible acting, fabulous interiors and lighting, and the silences are so expressive. The colour green is unforgetttable.A must see knockout!

Niche viewing
As a lover of foreign cinema I liked this, it’s a trifle slow and long, but what draws you in is the cinematography and use of colour, some scenes are mesmerisingly beautiful. Given the period during which this was set you can imagine the world in which Vladimir Putin grew up, which might provide insight into his current mindset

Gem of a movie with extraordinary actresses
Amazing movie. If you want to know how the common russian tried to cope during WW2. This is quite a good example. Haunting...

Against the turbit ebb and flow of human misery.
Beautiful film. The sentiment at its core is very similar to what is expressed by Matthew Arnold’s “Dover Beach” poem. The final stanza: Ah, love, let us be true To one another! for the world, which seems To lie before us like a land of dreams, So various, so beautiful, so new, Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light, Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain; And we are here as on a darkling plainSwept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,Where ignorant armies clash by night. It is the need to find in at least one other person a reciprocal love, refuge from a very troublesome world, a steady hold and mutual engagement with honesty, trust, etc. That this other person is of the same gender does not diminish in the least what seems a universal human need.
