New York Puzzle Company - New Yorker The Lighthouse - 500 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

The cover of the New Yorker for July 21, 1951, featuring a stately lighthouse set up on a grassy dune, has a timeless appeal – betrayed only by the vintage cars in the parking lot. The  seaside  is a familiar motif for many puzzle companies, but this painting, by artist  Ilonka Karasz , doesn’t highlight the ocean. In this tableau, the ocean is a background presence; the lighthouse is what catches your eye. Next, your attention is drawn down the sandy path to the ant-sized parade of people milling the grounds, whose perspective is focused beyond the frame. The image draws you both into and beyond its borders.From a puzzle-building perspective, this is one of my favorite styles to introduce to intermediate puzzlers, like my kids, thanks to the layers in the painting. There’s the dark blue of the sky that meets the light blue ocean, which leads into the green, grassy dune, and ends with the brown, sandy path and lot. The four horizontal layers are punctuated by set pieces like the lighthouse, picnickers, cars and tourists. All these elements build on one another allowing puzzlers to be successful with the 500-piece size.In a puzzle like this, it’s easy to see how each piece has its place. Fantastic high quality puzzle and storage box! Higher price for these NY-er puzzles, but worth it, especially if giving as a gift!

I have purchased a few NY Puzzle Company puzzles because I like the New Yorker covers. NY Puzzles are well made with sturdy pieces--about the same quality as Ravensburger. Recently, I purchased a puzzle which had three missing pieces. I was VERY impressed with NY Puzzle's Customer Service and how they resolved my problem.

New Yorker puzzles are fun to work! This one is colorful and just the right amount of challenge - not too hard - not too easy.
