Blue Note: A Story Of Modern Jazz

Blue Note, along with Atlantic, during this period put out some of the best jazz by both veteran players and up and comers. Many of the Blue Note acts would go on to make their imprint into the world of jazz. What is most important about this label was the fact that the company was started by two guys from Europe (Their origins escape me at this time) and if you know anything about jazz you will understand that Europe embraced the music way more then it was embraced here in America. The video talks about the origins of the owners of the label and runs through some of the greatest jazz musicians that we have ever heard. Jazz enthusiast will be happy with this video.

I like everything about this product and again as a Jazz lover it should be part of everyone's library collection.

If you're not one of those human beings who get mysteriously religious when discussing Blue Note Records this Doc won't impress you. Fortunately for me I am one of those human beings and this Doc impressed me a lot. What you get here is vantage point of view into the Blue Note mystique by some of the folks who helped make it happen. Entertaining and informative.

If you are a modern jazz fan, this movie is a must see. Its a good documentary about the history of the Blue Note record label. It was very complete and entertaining.

Hardly a "story of modern jazz," as subtitled, the film is nevertheless a fascinating remembrance of the most legendary jazz label by some of the musicians who recorded for the "mom and pop" operation. In addition, there's footage of some of the major players--Silver, Coltrane, etc.--that whets the appetite for more. The inclusion of a current artist like Cassandra Wilson is questionable, since the present-day Blue Note is nothing more than a "name" sold to the same huge corporation (EMI) that owns Capitol and other recognizable labels of the past. Where's Rudy? Why is there no mention of what inspired Lion and Wolff to start the label in the first place (Sidney Bechet), and where's the guy (Jimmy Smith) who kept the company afloat when it was about to sink?This one will appeal to collectors of Blue Note albums from the 50's and 60's as well as some younger listeners who have made the discovery of these sessions, their distinctive sound and artwork. If there's a major disappointment, it's the absence of film footage from an actual recording session, showing the viewer Van Gelder's methods and interactions with musicians.(Sigh. This film didn't hold the attention of a non-jazz crowd for 10 minutes, and even some 18-year-old fans of acid jazz thought 30 minutes was enough. It's a pretty spartan production that will appeal to viewers who recognize artists like J. J. Johnson, Bob Cranshaw and Tommy Turrentine. And it's a nice tribute to Max Roach, since he's allowed to speak at length. But to go higher than 4 stars is to forgo any semblance of objectivity.)

Excellent Story about The Blue Note Story

Interesting but there is no clear timeline and one wonders why on earth people talking on screen are not identified on their first appearance but much later on,

Am Jazz scheiden sich immer wieder die Geister. Für die einen nervtötende Katzenmusik, für die anderen höchster Kunstgenuss. Eine ganz besondere Stellung in der Geschichte des Jazz kommt dem kleinen Label Blue Note Records (The finest in Jazz since 1939) zu. Viele Jazzgrößen arbeiteten mit Blue Note: Lou Donaldson, Jimmy Smith, Andrew Hill, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Grant Green, Herbie Hancock, Hank Mobley, Blue Mitchell, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Henderson, Art Blakey und Horace Silver... Die Musik vieler dieser Jazzer wurde weithin bekannter durch Samples in Rapsongs von De La Soul, den Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill oder Gang Starr.Die Berliner Juden Alfred Lion und Frank Wolff sind hierzulande zwei zu unrecht Vergessene. Die beiden Buddies emigrierten in den 1930er Jahren in die USA und gründeten in New York City ein Jazzlabel, dem sie den stimmigen Namen Blue Note Records gaben. Das Duo Wolf und Löwe prägte durch seine Musikauswahl und die Gestaltung der Plattenhüllen das gesamte Genre, der Toningenieur Rudy Van Gelder sorgte für den perfekten Sound. Alles weitere erfährt man durch Julian Benedikts Film.Man kann Julian Benedikt für diese musikhistorische Spurensuche nicht genug danken! Gerade noch rechtzeitig holte er viele der Wegbegleiter von damals vor die Kamera, denn inzwischen sind einige verstorben. Es ist eine Freude den alten Herren beim Schwelgen in ihren Erinnerungen zuzusehen. Wer "Blue Note - A Story of Modern Jazz" anschaut, sieht wie ich alle fünf Sterne.

Wirklich gut gemachtes Dokumentar ueber Blue Note und die Gruender des Labels und auch die Jazzhelden die an dem Label teilnahmen. Eine Mischung aus Interviews, Kommentar und Musik Ausschnitte, die sehr geschickt und mit einem Gefuehl fuer diese Musik zusammengebracht sind. Fuer Jazzliebhaber ein Muss.
