Mathematics Made Simple: Sixth Edition

Favorite basic math study guide
I have tutored a great number of students in math. Most of these students (even ones who have progressed to Pre-Calculus and beyond) are lacking an understanding of basic mathematics (or have long since forgotten). For adult students who have been out of math class for 20 years or more, especially if they consider themselves to be poor math students, I prefer to start at "the beginning".That's where this book comes in. It covers whole numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), fractions (prime numbers, factoring, operations), decimals (converting to/from fractions, operations), percents (converting to/from decimals or fractions, word problems, ratios and proportions), negative numbers, algebraic expressions (translating from words into symbols, exponents, solving), polynomials (factoring binomials, quadratics, and trinomials), linear equations (ordered pairs, graphing, slope, solving systems of equations by elimination or substitution, quadratic equations (standard form, roots and factoring, quadratic formula, completing the square), sequences and series (arithmetic, geometric), geometry (lines and angles, constructions, relationships, parallels and transversals, congruence theorems, circles, polygons, similar figures), measurement of geometric figures (areas of quadrilaterals/triangles/circles, Pythagorean theorem, volume and surface area of solids, metric system), graphs, probability (permutations, combinations), and trigonometry.I particularly like the discussion of "completing the square" as this topic is usually not well discussed in modern math textbooks (leaving students thoroughly confused about a fairly simple technique). There is also a nice discussion of geometric constructions, which I remember vividly from ninth grade geometry, but have yet to meet a student in the past ten years who has even heard of this (although I had a great, tough teacher).I am currently using this book to prepare an adult student for the Accuplacer exam (math placement exam in college), but have a reference copy for myself as well. I believe it would be useful for homeschool families, adults taking a math class, and anyone who wants a good reference of the most relevant math topics. If there is a better, all-around beginning math book, I haven't found it. Highly recommended.

Nice product and good value
I've used this book for about 20 years and had to buy a few more copies since I gave the others away to my grandsons. Math is not difficult and complicated if you just start from the beginning and think through the problems while working them. This book is a nice guide. I really believe that a kid could catch up 3 or 4 grade levels if they would spend on hour per day during the Summer with this book.

Good review in mathematics
Bought this for my son, to review some mathematics for an upcoming exam. A good variety of problems with an answer key in the back.

Review of Mathematics Made Simple
I first borrowed this book from my local library for use with a high school student that I was helping. I had forgotten (or never learned!) some of the concepts that I needed to help him with. i found that this book provided clear, easy to understand explanations for the material presented, so i decided to buy a copy for myself. I recommend it highly.

It really helped!!
I'm so thankful to the testing administrator at my college for recommending the book!! The book is written very well and breaks down what I felt was hard. The glossary at the end of the chapters helped alot also. Great book!!!

Worst Book i ever had for non or little background people
when I first saw this book was apparently fascinating because I saw that could cover many topics of mathematics that were indispensable to the university but then I realized that I should be more realistic, instead of buying a book like that has all the most important subjects of mathematics and also when I started doing all the exercises personally had no problem because I was good at school but after my little brother use it and it turns out that my brother had trouble understanding the author for errors but I also notice I did not pay much attention because it I had a solid foundation and I had no problems when I started to move fast to help to understand my brother, realized that anyone who has trouble with math could not understand this author because he says in theory it does not pass step also in the exercises done by the author for clarification does not explain every step as was done then try another my 14 little brother and I had more problems because everything the author said it was not clear ,i found that the exercises done in the book is very useful for someone who takes calculus i have no problem with basic math ,preferred to see the website brightstorm.com ,khanacademy.org ,themathpage.com that are extremely useful, clear, practical and best of all is it was free.
