Works great to adapt a Cisco RJ45 console cable to DB9M DTE
Works great to connect a standard Cisco-compatible RJ45 console cable to a Mtueranc USB to RS232 Serial Adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CL2BPDNK) to connect to the console port of a Brocade ICX7250 switch. The Brocade console mini-USB port is NOT a true USB port (with an internal USB to serial chip), but a mini-USB port with RS-232 signals. The Mtueranc adapter converts this port to a standard female DB9 DCE port that this adapter is plugged into.StarTech GC98MF (DB9M to RJ45F) adapter is wired as follows:DB9 (M DTE) -- RJ458 -- CTS -- 1 (blue)6 -- DSR -- 2 (orange)2 -- RXD -- 3 (black)NC -- GND -- 4 (red)5 -- GND -- 5 (green)3 -- TXD -- 6 (yellow)4 -- DTR -- 7 (brown)7 -- RTS -- 8 (white)RJ45 pins 4 and 5 are both signal ground; only one needs to be connected. The Brocade doesn't need the hardware handshake signals, but I connected them anyway. This converts the Cisco "rollover" console cable to a standard DB9M DTE port.

Perfect to extend or adapt legacy RS232 devices
I used this to adapt to my Tektronix THS700 series oscilloscope (710/720/730) which has an RJ-45 RS232 port. Worked like a charm with the connections shown in the attached diagram (Thanks to the reviewer that posted the StarTech data sheet). This would also be perfect to extend RS232 cables using cheap CAT 5 ethernet cables. Of course, you'll need an RS232 to USB converter to connect to any computer made in the past decade. I've had very good luck with the UGREEN adapters sold on Amazon.
