Ballantine Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow: A Novel

A Most Epic Trojan Start!
Read this book in 2007, and its the 1st volume of the formidable "Troy" trilogy, from the author, the late great David Gemmell. Its about Troy and legend, and interwoven in its mythical history in this first part are three important people who will make their presents felt, for now and the coming future of Troy.At first there Prince Aeneas from Dardania, Helikaon for his friends and also known as Lord of the Silver Bow, who's haunted by traumatic experiences from his childhood, also there's the warrior Argurios the Mykene, who's sent to Troy to scout out the defences for King Agamemnon and who's Helikaon's sworn enemy, and finally there's the Priestess Andromache of Thera, betrothed to Prince Hektor of Troy against her will, but with a will of her own that will cause many problems for many people. Those three lives with are wonderfully described within the walls of Troy alongside that of the King and and the Princes of Troy, and what will happen at court and in normal domestic circumstances. Its a tale of love and hate, compassion and revenge, ambition and rivalry, and not to forget of peace and war between Troy and the outside Achaean world. What is to follow is a superb historical mythical tale about Troy and its rise to power within the Achaean world, and the jealously and hate from other parts of that famous ancient world that will turn into a situation of war between different factions.Highly recommended, for this is a tremendous begin of an amazing trilogy, and that's why I like to call this first episode: "A Most Epic Trojan Start"!

The Back Story To Troy
The story of Troy is special. Special in that when you actually seriously start to look at it no one really knows much about it. In fact many people doubt the whole thing actually happened, or is a series of events that Homer and other story tellers wound together to make an interesting tale (or should that be song?)This was my first Gemmell book and having bought the trilogy to read in one go, I was highly impressed with this first book in the three. There are many writers out there hacking at the past for good fiction and only a few really pull it off. In the past I have particularly enjoyed Simon Scarrow and Bernard Cornwell, so if you find yourself a fan of those - get this. In fact do yourself a favour and get the three so you can go straight to the next one without a wait!

I bought this book many years ago and always intended to write a review but never quite got around to it. A lively rendition of the old Greek myth first written down by Homer but one that gives the modern reader a real feel for the bronze age of the Myceneans, Acheans and Troijans. I have bought and read all David Gemmell's books ever since he first began writing and his Troy series are amongst my favourites. They sit in my Desert Island shelf of books that I will take with me when civilisation crumbles.

"Fantastic" what more can one say
I have just finished reading `Troy fall of kings` the third book in this trilogy & what an uptake on the Troy legend, all three books are absolutely brilliant. I would like to think that some day maybe Peter Jackson or another with his vision & imagination would make some David Gemmell heroic fantasy novels into films & give them the true accolade they deserve. The best heroic fantasy novel books I have ever read.
