I come from a backpacking background, and while I've transitioned over to primarily car camping I still use a tent along with a tarp to provide shelter from the elements. Last fall I encountered my first commercial campsite that had a packed gravel surface and learned the folly of trying to use ultra-lightweight titanium stakes on that sort of surface. I managed to survive mostly by accident, when I found some half-forgotten aluminum stakes in the bottom of my tarp bag and was able to get enough of them into the gravel to get the tent set up. But I learned my lesson, and on my return I looked around and ordered some of these heavy-duty stakes to add to my gear.I had a chance to use them this spring, when I stayed at another commercial campground that primarily catered to trailers/rvs and again used packed gravel at all their sites. I was able to hammer these heavy-duty stakes into the gravel with no problem at all. (And that's using MSR's lovely lightweight stake hammer, not a sledge hammer - LOL.) They went in easily, held firmly, but still came out cleanly at the end of my stay (with the assistance of the stake hammer's claw side), so I was very pleased with how well they worked.As others have mentioned these are far too heavy to use for backpacking, but if you're car camping where weight isn't really an issue these can handle some pretty gnarly campsite surfaces with ease.

I used these stakes to anchor my modified snow fence. I have a very rocky yard and was tired of trying to drive fence posts into the ground. These went in no problem, without bending. Very satisfied, just wish I had bought the longer 9.8 in. version to go a bit deeper into the ground.
