Does Not Sugar Coat Tough Subject
This is part of a series that touches on tough topics for teenagers. This particular one touches on teen pregnancy. Keeping the topic and goal of this book in mind, it is well written. It lays down the facts and the consequences of what can happen in a relatable way. Some books that discuss teen pregnancy gloss over the hard parts or sugar coat certain things. I would recommend this to any teenager even if they are not in this particular situation.Neema is seventeen and doing things that most girls her age do. She has a boyfriend, Nate, her friends, and she parties. One night she gets kicked out of her mom's house. She stayed with her boyfriend Nate and things happened. As a result she ends up pregnant. Throughout the entire ordeal, she definitely acts like a teenager, but she does have her mature moments. Most times where the POV is a teenager, they get on my nerves, but this was a pleasant surprise because Neema didn't.I was confused on who was supposed to be her new love interest (because there always is one). The one I thought it was turned out to be for one of her friends. There was some foreshadowing on who it ended up being at the beginning so it wasn't that much of a surprise. The baby's father also acted what is probably pretty normal for that type of situation.Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this. It was fairly short and was definitely a quick read (I finished it in an hour). I wish there was a bit more substance to it, but for what it is intended for-it was perfect. It is nice to read something that is realistic. Many books are not, even in contemporary fiction, but this one was. It's a story that I'm sure has happened many times over in real life.
