Boston-based Mission of Burma created an intense, somewhat claustrophobic sound that was based neither on speed nor brevity. They bash and flail on their instruments, and the music is dense (including early tape manipulations), but the songs are intelligent and captivating. "Secrets" unfolds into directed chaos with an anthemic feel; "Trem Two" also has a great sense of dynamics. Several band members contribute songs, which also keeps the album engaging. Released in 1982 but still fresh. --Robert Gordon

One of my favorite '80s albums
I love this album! I missed it when it came out - they seem to have been mostly a regional band. I found out about them from the book, Our Band Could Be Your Life, which I highly recommend. Mission of Burma is hard to categorize, but I liked this album more with each listen. I listened to it once a day for a week. It is now one of my favorite '80s albums.

Good album.
What do you know about old school hardcore/punk? Start here!

Art punk with guts.
This record was probably pretty revolutionary when it was first released, and it still totally holds up today despite the countless imitators. I haven't heard melody and hardcore punk mixed this well aside from perhaps Husker Du, and I think that I slightly prefer Mission of Burma. This record gets my blood pumping every time I listen to it!

Pretty good
Decent cd. If you're expecting fast, hardcore punk, this isn't it. But this is definitely an original Indy sound. Not what I expected, but still good.

Not really sure what all the hype was about. Just my opinion though, this album is highly regarded so maybe it will do more for you.

Not bad
All MOB records have the same feel and kind of sound the same. Great stuff though even if it sounds like the same couple of songs over and over again.

Just plain boring
The group lacks a good lead singer. The songs all sound alike. Reading the other reviews, I must say that I am unfamiliar with the albums they site. Seems as though you must be a fan of punk music to like this band. I've heard of punk music, but don't know what it is. If you are in the same boat I am in, then you won't like this album. Be forewarned. I must have read a positive article about them in the New York Times. I will quit buying music recommended by the NYT. I will say they tried to make their lyrics interesting. I notice that song #15 (Laugh the World Away) has the phrase, "Where is justice?". That's the question of the ages.
