My Name is Jorge: On Both Sides of the River (Poems in Spanish and English)

This book focuses on some of the stereotypes seen in the classroom for students who speak Spanish or visit ESL classes. It is from the student's point of view, in poem form, and it is really touching. Each poem is also written in both English and Spanish.I would definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to address community in the classroom or to help kids focus on seeing someone else's point of view in a situation. While this book could be used with any age, I would advise it to be taken in a serious context for younger students or children, not necessarily as light reading.

Made my poetry unit come alive! Poems create a narrative of Jorge's new life and my bilingual students were able to laugh and discuss intense topics all in one lesson. Very relevant for today's classroom.

I love the poems in this book and have used it often in classrooms. However, the Spanish translations are not the best. Will there ever be an updated version?

This book should be read by all teachers that work with ESL students especially those that want to automatically want to "Americanize" students names- which is disrespecting the students' culture.

Very powerful book, my ESL students really relate to it and it sparked some great discussions in our poetry unit.
