(When Nobody Needs Me)24.WitchcraftA total of 96 pages and 24 selections (each selection ranging from 3 to 5 pages). Obviously, these are not transcriptions, but the arrangements are still complex (Arranged by Brent Edstrom). I am more than impressed. These arrangements are SUPERB. I'm a huge fan of Bill Evans and I can truly say I've found a great book that I now treasure. They accurately match the harmonies and register-on-the-piano that Bill Evans used in playing these pieces. The sound is complete, with the use of enough bass and chords structured in 7ths and 10ths. You will find you left and right hand playing a lot of inner chords while holding the melody, something Bill Evans did a lot. The leads are NOT note-to-note transcriptions but carry substance, and emulate Bill Evans 100%. The "leads" per selection vary in dept, as some of the selections have more lead action than others. Either way, I am excited and glad to own these arrangements. THANK YOU!

Perfect for your own ‘Evans’ delectation
As a BIG Bill Evans admirer (my mentor from Juilliard’s husband co produced with Harry Evans (Bill’s Brother) and he himself was impressed! The transcriptions are exemplary. This is an amazing steal for the price! This book does a fine job of highlighting Bills signature inner voicing’s. Overall a great buy. If I have only one note it would be that I wish the book came with a reference as to where each piece was transcribed from.

Cliff Notes for Bill Evans harmony
Not complete transcriptions, but nonetheless chock full-o Bill Evan's signature voicings and phrases, providing a good snapshot of some of Bill's treatments of these tunes. Definitely valuable for study and as resource for quick insight into Bill Evan's harmonic approach. The manuscript is top-notch, fine paper and printing, and the arrangements are suitable (in my opinion) for presentation at student recitals. More advanced players will want to adapt excerpts for further shedding, and listen to the originals to fill in the gaps, but overall a solid book of tunes. One star off for a lack of annotations, and some of the editor's necessary melodic compromises that fall short in contrast to Evan's genius. (Forgivable!)

Pleasant Surprises
This is a great collection of Bill Evans arrangements, beautifully written for the intermediate to better player. It has been rewarding to play some unfamiliar pieces and enjoy the pleasant surprises of beautifully sounding jazz works. If you play background music for social events or in public, this is a must book to access a few pieces for your repertoire. I enjoy Alice in Wonderland, Autumn Leaves, and Letter to Evan to mention a few. I had not heard the Spartacus movie theme song for many years, but I found the arrangement beautiful and interesting to play. I highly recommend this book and all of the others in this Hal Leonard series.

Good arrangements!
Brent Edstrom has created very nice interpretations of Bill Evans pieces. The upper intermediate difficulty allows for quick learning although the arrangements sound very convincing. The written out solo sections are great for those of us who lack true jazz improv skills but love the sound. I'm impressed that there are so many titles (24) in one reasonably priced book and that Edstrom has such a deep bag of arranging skills. There are delightful surprises in every piece. I've already ordered three more of his books in the Jazz Piano Solos series: "Duke Ellington", "Disney" and "Jazz for Lovers". I've added Edstrom to my go-to list of current pop/jazz arrangers including Mark Hayes, Larry Shackley, Dan Coates and Carol Tornquist.

My Foolish Heart is Bb, not A as Bill Evans played it.
Nicely written arrangements giving a flavor of Bill Evans' voicings. However "My Foolish Heart "is in the key of Bb Major and not A Major as Bill Evans preferred. He liked to play My Foolish Heart in A because of the sympathetic vibrations with the open A string on the acoustic bass when playing with his trio.

A detailed transcription of Bill Evans
If you want a specific transcription of the Bill Evans treatment for these tunes, this collection will give you Evans' specific sound and technique. If, however, you would prefer to provide your own embellishments given only a melody line and chord progression, this book will require some editing on your part. I work most comfortably from lead sheets. The chord progressions are clearly shown above the staff, but the clear melody line must be gleaned from all of the melody improvisation in the treble clef.

A Great Set List of Bill Evans - But No "Waltz For Debby"
This is a pretty great set of Bill Evans standards, and fits in well with the excellent "Hal Leonard Jazz Piano" series -- but somehow they left out "Waltz for Debby" which is probably THE signature Bill Evans piece. I wasn't expecting a full exact transcription but a few pages of his "#1 hit" would have been nice and completed the book.

Bill Evans piano solo selection
A first class selection of piano solos as played by Bill Evans. The transcriptions include some of of my favouriteclassic popular songs such as 'Night and Day'. The arrangements are mostly manageable for a pianist of moderateability. Highly recommended for the jazz arrangements and good value (pricewise).

Book collation errors - both duplicated and omitted selections.
I couldn't possibly give this book anything more than one star as in the collation, 4 of the 24 selections havebeen omitted (Suicide Is Painless/Song From M.A.S.H; Tenderly; Up With The Lark; Witchcraft).Three of the songs have been duplicated (Night And Day; Peri's Scope; A Sleepin' Bee).Someday My Prince Will Come is printed twice, firstly with the first page only followed by 3 pages from MyHeart Stood Still. Later in the book, Someday My Prince Will Come appears correctly.I don't know whether this is just my copy but this is total incompetence by Hal Leonard and what a shamefor any artist, let alone the talent of Bill Evans for the company to have made such a mess. I also feelsorry for the author Brent Edstrom who put so much effort into this book. Please comment if this has happened to anyone else.

Love this book!!!
So happy I bought this book. Wonderful arrangements that sound very similar to Bill Evans style chords and comping. If you like Bill Evans, I really recommend this book. My only complaint is that I wish "Waltz for Debby" was included.
