Enjoyed the book
The book is easy reading. Noyalas' style flows well and, though not an epic, in-depth study of the battle or its place in the 1864 fighting in the Valley, it gives a great snapshot of the fight. For me it acts as an solid intro that compels further study!

Good detailed history of this battle in Shenandoah County.
Good history of this battle with lots of details about the participants, residents, battles, events, impact, economics, attitudes and morale of this key battle for NW Virginia. Details like moving trains overland to keep them from the Yankees, a local wealthy resident trying to profit off the union's welfare offer to impacted residents (hint: Hupp had gold and supplies stashed under the porch and in a local cave), the Confederate charge down Signal Knob, the eastern assault on Fisher's Hill through a steep bramble covered mountainside, and much more. Plenty of pictures and drawings that are recognizable by local residents. Good follow up on how participants from both sides met for many years for annual picnics to commemorate the battle.I found the details on Custer interesting though they did not cover his searching for and seizing one of the finest horses in the country for his own use. Other Virginia battles are noted as they had an impact on or were impacted by the Fisher's Hill maneuvers. This book should be read in conjunction with "Shenandoah County in the Civil War" for a more complete understanding of the battles in the Shenandoah Valley and the participation of and impact on local residents. A good book I heartily recommend.

history comes alive
Great book on the peripheral aspects of both the Union and Confederate importance of this area of the Virginia countryside.
