Controversial but realistic novel
Ordered this for school as it is one of the texts to be taught for the key stage 3.The issues and themes that it deals with are very important to that age range, in that it includes the issues of being a female in a patriarchal society, having a step mother, being abused and neglected by parents, being an intelligent and academic female in a society that gives no value to women at all. The struggles of fighting against a traditional culture with non-traditional ideas.a HIT with the students!

fantastic book
I read this amazing story ............. I had to retell it to one of my daughters as I was reading it ..... she found it fascinating ... she is 12.... the young girl is unwanted by her step mother who is cruel to her ... she is lucky that she has a loving aunt and grandfather who encourage her to do well at school which she does and this becomes her way of becoming free ........................I learnt a lot about Hong Kong and China in the process...

Book club read
Arrived quickly. A quick read as this is a children's book. Read as part of a book club. There was lots to discuss, but not my usual kind of reading, so would not recommend as such. A true story told in a matter-of-fact way as memories of an unhappy childhood. The insights into Chinese culture, history and language were very interesting.

Ive been meaning to read this since I was in ...
Ive been meaning to read this since I was in middle school but never got the chance to, primarily due to my laziness in reading. Im grateful I did end up reading it after being encouraged by my past english teacher and a friend. Its an autobiography by Adeline Yen Mah and her childhood upbringing in a family that neglects most of her existence and achievements.
