Programmable Logic Controllers

An outstanding book
Clearly written, accurate and well illustrated, this high quality textbook is an excellent resource to teach yourself the fundamentals of PLCs. Mr. Petruzella has even added photographs and descriptions of the inner workings of commonly used I/O devices, which is especially helpful for novices. Based on Allen Bradley's SLC500 series and their RS LOGIX programming software, it covers enough ground to enable technicians to understand how they work, how to troubleshoot I/O problems, understand, modify and even originate programs found in typical industrial applications.Having moved from the power generation field--where large scale distributed control systems do the vast majority of control and PLCs handle packaged auxiliaries--to the manufacturing industry, I encountered I/O devices and motion control applications I wasn't familiar with. Mr. P's book filled in the gaps.It would have been nice if answers to at least the odd numbered review questions had been included to help quickly test my understanding, but when in doubt, I go back to the text where the answers can always be found.I also purchased the LogixPro PLC simulator (Mr. P also wrote a lab exercise manual that comes with the simulator or you can buy the simulator by itself). It gives you the ability to write, test and debug programs using the RS LOGIX instruction set and programming interface--in fact it's very close to the real deal. I really could have used that when I first started programming PLCs because learning to program using a real PLC hooked up to lights and switches is too limiting (and prohibitively expensive for many of us). And I'd rather not test and debug my programs using live machinery if I can avoid it.

I bought this book for an introductory PLC class I was taking. I used it later in my Advanced PLC class. It's Allen Bradley based and covers just about everything with the SLC 500 and RS Logix 5000. It's filled with real world examples to help explain the various program commands. I'm not sure I could wire and program an AB PLC just with this book, as it doesn't cover every minute detail of programming, but along with the outstanding Instructor I had, this became an invaluable reference.

Great Textbook or Reference Manual.
I had to buy the previous edition of this book for an Advanced PLC class that I took while in college and liked the book so much that I bought the newer version when it came available. I like the newer version because it covers ControlLogix 5000 programming and platform in the last chapter and appendix's where the previous version did not. However, I did not like that this book was only available in softcover because I used my old one out in the field and did not have to worry about destroying it because the rugged hardcover would hold up. All in all, this is an excellent book as a reference manual or for beginners trying to learn programming instructions and how PLC's work.

Kindle users READ the Fine Print....
This is the third time the small print has screwed me while trying to use my Kindle. This time I find that I can ONLY download to 2 devices after I bought the book. There are ALWAYS 3 devices necessary for ANY Kindle download. 1st is a good readable laptop or tablet. #2 is a cell phone which is the poorest visually but necessary because it is almost always available. Lastly is a Kindle reader.. Allowing only 2 devices means one of the 3 must be abandoned. My cellphone is always with me so while it is the least readable of the 3 it is always handy. The Kindle reader (Fire) is the least useful but some titles will only load on a Kindle. The laptop or tablet is the most readable universal of the bunch. So I have to decide to dump the Kindle or the cellphone. Forcing someone to dump their Kindle so that they can have total access to their Kindle textbooks is laughable.

This is a good book to learn
This is a good book to learn. It has beginning PLC to more advance PLC. The situation is that the book just show ones how to do it but no CD-ROM with the book. If one wants to do it, one has to purchase the lab book. That's another $85.

Good book. Great for learning
Decent. Book was in decent condition and I eventually found the CD that came out of the CD holder in shipping and got in the pages of another book I bought that shipped with it. The book itself and CD are great learning materials though!

Another excellent book by Frank P.
Excellent book!! It starts with the basics and works its way on up. Each chapter starts with Chapter objectives, has lots of diagrams and photos, packed full of useful and practical information, is divided into easy to follow and understand sections, and ends with chapter review questions and problems. Has real world photos of actual equipment in use in industry.-Overview of PLC's-PLC hardware-Number systems and codes-Fundamentals of logic-Basics of PLC programming-Wiring diagrams, Ladder logic programs-Timers, counters, ect....Once again, Excellent book!!!

What a treasure trove!
Being a marine engineer, I have been through quite a lot of textbooks, but I must say that this is easily on the top 3 of the best text books I have ever read! This book is seriously an amazing book on SLC500 PLCs! It explains everything about the workings of how the PLCs are consructed and contains lots of asignments to further support learning.Everything is illustrated in color and very visually pleasing and explanatory. It is an expensive book, but totally worth it, if you want to learn about Alen Bradley SLC 500 and digital electronics in general.Color print is much more expensive than black and white. Always are...I have a hard time imagining a better way to present this so that everybody can understand how PLCs work. It really has it all! I purchased the companion book with more asignments as well, but I haven't gotten around to seriously looking af it yet. I did browse through it though and it seems to have the same high level of content as his book.If you are looking for really high quality information on PLCs, this is the perfect book! I am highly recommending this to anyone wanting to learn about automation/PLCs/digital electronics.

Book is good but the carrier service is worse
I know that the book is already in Canada, I am hoping to get call or any letter ,but somebody left the tag near the door I got it late and I called fedex more than 20 times ,but failed to receive the book . I went the address after calling them ,but they send the book in other place as my requested but without informed.Book is good ,but the Fedex service is worse I never prefer that Carrier . I got it after 1 week only. They may or may not come without informed in the apartment and went back just for formality. No one knows they came or not. Thanks
