Q: Couldn't I just use my French press instead? It looks just like this product.

Yes, you may use a french press for it but I wouldn't recommend it. I use to do it in mine and it worked perfectly fine but I believe the movement of up and down so much of the metal filter against the glass made the glass weak and the glass cracked one day with just putting hot water in it. I can't say for sure that was the reason but I won't do it again. I noticed all the milk frothing has a plastic holding the metal filter. I hope this helped.

Q: can you use this on a stovetop to heat milk as well?

I put this in my general review, but is specific to this question... Note to those asking about heating your milk in this container on the stove --- It is not ideally suited to do that because the stainless steel is too thin to handle very much heat without scorching the milk at the bottom... HOWEVER.... I have a workaround if you want to heat and froth in the same container. While my Moka Express is heating on the stove top burner I place the frother next to the burner to slowly heat at the same time. I will occasionally place it on the burner next to the espresso maker, but always moving it on the heat source and for never more than 15 seconds at a time. I can tell when the milk has heated sufficiently when the outside of the frother is warm (not hot) to the touch, unless you prefer your milk much warmer.

Q: Has anyone used this to emulsify/foam their bulletproof coffee?

I have not used it specifically for that, but I think it would work really well IMO
