So tiny! Surprisingly great paints! My favorite student-grade watercolors!
This is the tiniest plastic watercolor set I own that accommodates 12 half pans. It is very slim and light, but doesn't feel flimsy in the hand or when you open and close the lid. It's smaller than my smartphone and can easily fit into a pocket or pencil case, but still has 3 nicely sized mixing wells. The brush it comes with is a size 4, and about 4 and a half inches long from the tip of the handle to the end of the bristles. It has a nice snap to it and comes to a decent point. Because it's so tiny I can see it possibly being uncomfortable to use for people with larger hands, or people with dexterity issues. If that's the case I recommend using a collapsible travel brush or water brush, which you can also easily throw into your pocket/pencil case/backpack.The color selection in this set is so lovely and unique. The top row of colors is basically a split primary (2 each of yellow, red, and blue), while the bottom row has 2 greens, 3 earth tones, and 1 neutral. There is no space wasted with black or white, which is common with lots of 12 half-pan student sets. The primary yellow, magenta, and cyan that comes with this set are so vibrant and transparent. I've never seen colors like the magenta and cyan appear in any other small student grade sets. When you mix these three, the colors you get are so clear and vibrant. The other 3 primaries that come with this set are all just as beautiful and mix well with one another, and with the 6 colors together you can almost mix any color you could possibly need. The convenience colors that are included are all nice as well, and have their own function within the set. If I were to nitpick at this set, my single complaint would be that I wish the raw umber could be replaced with burnt sienna, but that is obviously a personal preference. The quality of all these paints are excellent, especially for the price. They don't require any pre-soaking, or scrubbing at the pans to pick up pigment (unlike cotman paints). They are so easy to activate, and in fact if you use too much water they become so soft that it's easy to pick up top much paint with your brush.Admittedly, I bought this just for the travel palette, but I was so shocked and impressed with the paint that I'm both excited to use them, and dreading the idea of running out of them.If you're an artist on a budget, a beginner looking for their first watercolor set, or someone just looking to add watercolor to their art repertoire, get these! You absolutely won't regret it. This set is cheaper and far superior to the often-recommended Winsor & Newton Cotman sets. Do yourself a favor and choose this one instead.
