Growing Up Proctor: Life on the Gallo

I love this book that brings a little comedy with reality of hard times to survive in the 1930s, 40s. I know Alma personally and was in the same class at school with one of her older sisters.You can just sit down, relax and read this book, finding it entertaining and I would encourage others to purchase it for themselves and gifts for others. It is a healthy entertainment during the Pandemic when we are quarantined at home.

I read this book before the Big Freeze hit, and I was grateful for its reminder that, like the Proctors, I could get through it. After all, a little cold weather can't be as hard as herding rattlesnakes or raising 8 kids without running water. For a real picture of the West in the middle of the 20th Century, this is the book you want to read, for its memories, if you share them, for its facts if you're guilty of romanticizing that country. It'll remind you to do right and check on your neighbors. Should be required reading for all those people who've moved to Santa Fe.

Received my copy today and could hardly wait to get to reading it. It is well written about life experiences the Proctor family had, as well as many of us who grew up on nearby ranches in the Corona area and on the Gallo. Alma, you wrote a wonderful book and it is sincerely appreciated to have these experiences in book form. Reading the different stories brings back many wonderful memories. I know your family is extremely proud of you. Great book!

Fabulous, funny and heartfelt book about growing up on a ranch in central New Mexico. I thoroughly loved this book. Having known the family my entire life, this was a real treat to read and enjoy this book of short stories about life, love and family.

I love the book. I really like the short story format. I can grab the book and read a story anytime I have a free minute. These stories provide a window into a lifestyle that is mostly gone in this country. It has been a joy to read.

I enjoyed reading the stories about growing up in Lincoln County, NM. All were short stories based on certain incidents happening at that time in her life. You could easily sit down and read as many of the stories at one time as you wished, or as few as you wished.

This book is full of short stories. They are interesting, some funny and some a little sad. Most of the stories are entertaining, but speak about life and lessons. Once I started reading, it was hard to put down. Looking forward to book 2!
