Great book that is PACKED full of useful recipes.
Great book. I LOVE her style of writing and this is packed full of recipes. I'm going to attach some photos so you can get an idea the size of this book. There are no fancy photos- just recipe after recipe. I really like how practical the instructions and recipes are.... and there are so many great recipes in here that would be awesome to make as gifts during the holidays (ie. lemon extract, vanilla extract). We have a small garden and I'm hoping this book will help me effectively use some of our yield this year. Also looking forward to trying some of the sweet treats that are made from fruit- I don't like giving my kids too much store bought candy because of all of the dyes and random ingredients. It will be neat to make it from scratch from something that at least has some nutritional value.Note: I originally started reading this on eBook as my one free book a month as a Prime member. I ordered it in print after getting a few chapters in. The eBook is a nice resource, but this really has so many recipes that I can use that it's just a bit nicer to flip through in print.

Solid, old fashioned advice anyone could use today.
I bought this book, and it's AMAZING. Where she describes how to make cheeses, she also tells you how to build a cheese press. She divides recipes by primary ingredient - and tells you how to preserve it, with the idea that you just harvested a garden full of it (or just bought half a cow from your butcher!). There are also a ton of great traditional recipes, from bannock to knopf to bubble & squeak! Whether you're looking for ways to stretch your food dollar, reconnect with your roots, homestead or find new (old) recipes to try, this is 320 pages of easy to read recipes, interesting tidbits, history lessons and plain good advice. Not only that, but the author is sweet, smart lady who always full of new ideas. If you buy this book, you can feel good knowing that you're supporting someone who is excited to share with others, and is happy to help others in their exploration of the Homesteading lifestyle in any stage - from complete newbie to seasoned off-gridder (is that a word? It is now!).

Excellent excellent cookbook.
As someone who likes to cook and bake from scratch, this cookbook is a Godsend. Not a can of Cream of Crud soup in sight! This is just back to basics, use what you have, cook with fresh produce, keep things simple kind of cooking. Exactly the way I try to cook. Excellent info on vegetable and fruit storage, dehydrating (including how to REhydrate, which is just as important but rarely included!), canning, cold storage and more. Honestly, I have downloaded literally hundreds of cookbooks over the years, and this one has placed itself at the top of my "use most often" list. If you don't want to feed your family chemicals and preservatives in the food you prepare, don't hesitate to get this book. Thank you, Marie Beausoleil!

One of the best cookbooks I've purchased.
Such an interesting book! I've tried a few recipes so far and they worked wonderfully - there are many more that I want to try. But what makes this book appealing to me are the countless recipes and directions for making things you would see on a homestead now, and years ago (vinegars, condiments of all kinds, cheeses, etc.). I also like how many recipes have further recipes, so that you are making use of everything (for example, there are recipes for apples and then recipes for apple jelly, using the apple peels; Corn recipes, but then corn stock to make with the leftover cobs and to use as a vegetable stock; etc). This isn't a "pretty-picture" cookbook if that's what you're looking for. It's a straight-forward book. This wasn't what I was looking for, so it didn't bother me at all. It also isn't what I would call 'gourmet' - it is simple home cooking, and in my mind, should be considered classic cooking. Some of the best food uses uncomplicated processes and just amount of ingredients that complete the dish without going overboard. One thing that's a little unconventional, there is not an index. But the table of contents is organized very well and lists every single recipe in the book. Just a matter of reversing how most indexes/table of contents work. Again, it wasn't an issue with me.I adore cookbooks, but so many of them I just look at the pictures and maybe make one or two recipes from them. This is one of my very favorites in my collection and will be put to use all year. It is definitely worth every penny!!

Thrilled with this cookbook
Generally I don't buy cookbooks, because I am more of a cook with what I have on hand type of gal. It is way more than a cookbook, since it also encompasses everyday "How to"'s like how to make your own brown sugar & even how to can certain items. My husband is excited to try her recipe for canning apricots. I am already turning down page corners of recipes I want to try. This is a book that I highly recommend and I believe it will fast become a classic must-have cookbook.

Living, Cooking and Learning No Matter What Your Age !
A Cabin Full of Food is one of the best books I have. I simply love this book which covers every aspect of cooking from scratch and since I am a prepper and research the cooking aspect in the case of an emergency situation, this book was just terrific. Also, I have tried many of the recipes and they are very good. So many books like this have recipes that you try and some of them are almost inedible. Not with this book. Even if there never is an emergency situation, this book covers so many different aspects of cooking and is one I would highly recommend. I this as a gift at a wedding shower it would be a hit. Everyone just starting out cooking can benefit and learn how to do it right, and people like me who have been cooking for half a century or more can learn some new things. Thanks so much for this book.

This is the best "old fashioned" cook book
This is the best "old fashioned" cook book I have come across. I got it on my Kindle, but am going to order the paper back copy so I have a hard copy back up in my kitchen. I live from our garden and not from store bought food so these are the types of recipes that are most useful to me, as none of these call for a "box of cake mix, or can of this and that" they just use real home grown or farm fresh foods. Impressed that the author doesn't have home refrigeration!

A Big Collection of Basic, Old-Fashioned Recipes
I loved the title and cover of this book so decided to give it a browse. It is a VERY big cookbook and would be suitable for someone with limited cooking skills, looking for basic, old-fashioned type recipes, of all kinds. Particularly for people who like to store, preserve...not really all that useful for someone like myself as a vegetarian and preferring things made fresh each day, from organic products etc...But I can certainly see the appeal this book would have for a lot of people and I did note some bread recipes I would try.Kind of like raiding grandma's recipe box or drawer. :-)

Not necessarily for beginners, this is a great reference for years to come.
On one visit to our cottage, my mom discovered this book on my shelf and started going through it. At first she was dismayed that there were no glossy, pretty pictures but that didn't stop her from digging deeper. That didn't stop me either. This is a book I know I'll be running to time and again as I continue my quest for more self-sufficiency and "real food."
