Linear, clinical, dry, grey, straight down to business. IMO, for a particular audience.
I had no experience with in ear studio monitors (IEM) before this; my arsenal consists of airpods, apple earphones, random other earphones, Sennheiser 558, some experience with some Yamaha studio monitor speakers, and Sennheiser HD650's. So my initial impression was just 'ew'! But I replaced the tips with Comply t500 tips, and I fell in love with them. However, be aware, they have a very clinical sound, very dry and grey, but quite detailed, at least compared with my arsenal at the time. Kind of like a dry scientific paper that replicated previous findings, as opposed to an award winning fictional novel. Or military rations as opposed to a chef's choice dinner. These are for the black coffee drinkers, the grey 2004 Toyota Sentra base model drivers who oil their car every winter, and use an exclusively black-and-white laser printer at home. I know, it sounds like these are not 'enjoyable' per se, but they can be with the attitude that you are critically listening, or analyzing the sound, as opposed to enjoying an artistic piece for aesthetic pleasure. Hence, these definitely need some burn-in time. For myself, a few days was enough. These AS10's have been my daily driver for the past few weeks, and I have found them fantastic for commuting with the Comply tips mentioned above; good sound isolation. These got me interested enough in critical listening and detailed sound to buy some Shure SE846's; unfortunately I sent them back due to some problems with the order. Nevertheless, of course in comparison, the KZ AS10's lacked any hint of sparkly treble or mind-altering bass. However, the detail is there if you look for it, and the bass is controlled, calm, and is there as well.I now have some Ikko OH10's, and they follow a similar sound signature IMO, with added bass/sub-bass and soundscape in comparison to the AS10's. I do miss the SE846's; but if you can live without the aesthetic bass/sub-bass and sparkly treble, these are overall fantastic IEM's, and I am convinced that one can compose fantastic music or analyze music critically with these IEM's alone without need for upgrade. If you like these but want just a tad more detail, fantastic soundscape, and proper bass/sub-bass for ~$170 more, my initial (<1h) impression of the Ikko OH10's would be as an upgrade to AS10 along these dimensions.Have fun on your journey/research for your endgame IEM's :)!
