A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

I'd obviously heard of Joyce before reading this book, though I hadn't read any of his major works. I had high expectations though, and I was thoroughly disappointed. I found the prose confusing and hard to get along with. Not a lot happened but everything was described to such an extent that you lost interest in anything that did happen. If you're a Joyce fan, you may find it interesting to learn a little about his life, but as a stand-alone piece of work, I didn't find it enjoyable to read in the slightest.

A friend suggested I read this and it wasn't for me. I found the book difficult to grasp, and despite it being quite short, I think it could have been a good 100 pages shorter. It has its moments, but it's definitely not something I would recommend, but, of course, there are many people who love this book, I just can't see why.

Started reading Ulysses and then thought I should this work first. Have read "Dubliners" some years ago and I loved those stories. This is something quite different but I am up for the challenge and a new experience.

Ler na versão original é um desafio por conta do estilo do autor e das diversas referências à política da época feitas. Nesse ponto essa edição ajuda bastante pois possui notas abundantes e esclarecedoras.
