Q: any issues using these as comutter bags with a computer and change of clothes?

They are not water resistant. Clothes are soaked after a ride in the rain.

Q: Can i fit my laptop, notebooks, and textbooks into the bags? I'm looking for bags to commute with between my apartment and the University.

Absolutely, the bags expand upward, will hold a laptop, books, & lunch.

They are 6 inches across the top and then hang down about 12 inches Ithaca great product very durable Ok

Q: Do the back of the bags, that are next to the wheel, have some sort of rigid material to keep the bag from bulging inward and interfering with spokes?

Yes, there is a rigid material of what feels like hard plastic sewn into the bottom rear quadrant of the pannier. It is sturdy enough to prevent an inward curve toward the spokes in most cases. I have a rear fender that has supports extending to the back of the fender. When I have full and heavy bags, the pannier leans onto the fender support but does not come in to contact with the spokes. My panniers are more than a year old and I ride daily. They show a little wear but still maintain their shape.
