Can you light a bowl easily?

No, I don't think so. I use a "Twisted Bee Hemp Wick" to ignite whatever is needed to light up (purchased on amazon). The wick is great. This way, you do not inhale any butane. I've used the lighter to light the wick of a candle one time, then I light the Hemp Wick from the candle wick whenever I need to ignite something like a pipe.

Does it work well with pipes?

I would say no. The arc needs to be put close to what you are lighting. Close enough for the arc to touch. While the lighter is slim, with the lid open it would not go into a standard pipe to be close enough to light it.
