Inside Alcatraz: My Time on the Rock

For those with a "fascination" for Alcatraz
Having visited Alcatraz whilst in San Francisco in 2019, this book was a great read. The author was one of the "speakers" on the tape you listen to whilst touring the inside of Alcatraz, and being able to go inside one of the solitary confinement cells made his writing about it bring it to life again. Readers make up their own mind if the punishment in Alcatraz was too harsh, no chance for rehabilitation, no escape, you did your time, but as the sign says "break the rules you go to prison, break the prison rules you go to Alcatraz". Jim seemed to eventually come through it, but he had broken the rules! No escape from "The Rock".

Informative account of Alcatraz.
Was going to San Francisco & wanted to read up on Alcatraz before going. This is a story of Jim’s Quillen’s route to the rock. It’s clear he had a hard life, with little opportunity given to him. I was surprised to learn Alcatraz was not filled with the most violent & nasty criminals. If you were difficult at a different prison & unliked, they could request a transfer- if a space was available off you went.Interesting pre trip read.

Decent
Decent read. I enjoyed reading about his early life and how he ended up in prison. Got a little boring when he first gets to Alcatraz but then once the seige starts it's picks back up.

Brilliant read
I really enjoyed reading this and was gutted when I got to the end. Jim's story is honest, brave and inspirational. Visiting Alcatraz is on my 'to do' list and reading this has made me want to go even more! Would definitely recommend!!
