Hello Amazon Guest, the Wimmer-Ferguson Crawl and Discover mat is not treated with flame retardant chemicals and contains polyester, nylon, and cotton fabrics that meet the flammability requirements of the California Bureau of Home Furnishings Technical Bulletin 117. However, as with any kind of product containing synthetic fabric, caution should still be exercised near an open flame or burning cigarettes. Hello Linda B., the fluffy Wimmer-Ferguson play mat has full sheets of crinkle paper inside the 7.75" x 7.75" flap that covers the mirror and the flap with the car image. The wings on the black & white bumblebee also have crinkle paper within. An attractive alternative, with slightly less padding, is our Playtime Pond Play Mat (Amazon stock #B015OE2P2M), that has crinkle paper in the large yellow flower petals and dragonfly wings. Q: Would this be suitable for a 6 month old?

Hello MegADow, the Wimmer-Ferguson play mat is perfect for children from 3 months to 18 months old, and is purposefully designed to help babies with tactile exploration and the very important first-year eyesight development.
