Q: Can this be placed directly on hardwood or carpet for use?

Yes it can. However, if you are expecting there to be a hole the size of a golf hole, there isn't anything. It is just a flat piece of AstroTurf that can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes for roughly $40 instead of the $134 these guys are charging. I have been trying to return mine and they will not send me a return label. So be careful of the pictures on the website as they are not a real depiction of what you are buying.
