Nice book!
The book is pretty awesome as an inspirational recourse. Features a great group of artists. I purchased this used and it’s a library copy, which is fine. Love reusing. Very happy!

Fantastic Hand Lettering Showcase
This is a great collection of stories and work from a truly talented group of today's artists. It chronicles various methods of creating hand lettered work, as well as works as a great showcase for each featured artist's style of hand lettering. It's also really useful for gathering inspiration for personal hand lettering projects as well.

Great read!
My favorite book on typography and lettering. Interesting interviews with artists who share their technique and styles. They all give really good insight into their design process. Wouldn't really call this a "how to" book. More of an influence, really. Highly recommended.

Not what I wanted, but nice pictures
This book is a collection of examples of type illustration from many professionals. You see samples of their work and their websites are listed. This was the best part of the book. This is not a good instruction book on drawing type, so like another reviewer, the title of this book is really misleading. The end is kind of sad in that the author spends about a dozen pages giving an intro to type classifications, type anatomy, tools (duh) and a couple of (too brief) exercises. The book ends with about 15 pages of specimen sheets so you can trace copies of letters from basic fonts like Times and Helvetica. If you want to see lots of good examples of professional typographic illustration Pinterest is free.

I like this book
I like this book, its very inspirational. I do wish it had a larger section on teaching you how to do hand lettering, the majority of the book is short interviews and explainations of featured work. only the last quarter of the book is about teaching you how to do it. I'm a big fan of the type sheets in back. It's a good tool to get you going on your first projects. It's made me print out more type samples and store them in the handy flap in the back of the book. I was hoping for more instruction, less gallery of good hand drawn typography. If Alex Fowkes comes out with a volume two with a little more emphasis on instruction and techniques I'd give it 5 stars. Drawing Type is worth buying, I carry it around with me in my art bag, but not a necessity.

Perfekt zum Schriften erlernen
Das Buch ist sehr ausführlich geschrieben und illustriert toll wie man Buchstaben zeichnen kann. Dabei deckt es so ziemlich jedes Thema in der Hinsicht ab.

Worth the price, beautiful showcase of art pieces
This book has everything any one needs to learn and appreciate typography and handlettering. I always had an interest in type in general, and this book definitely intrigued me. First off, it is not a step-by-step book telling you how to draw each and every type of lettering, wasting pages with "blank practice sheets" to help you practice. Instead, it includes typography from around the world. It has classic vintage type, contemporary type and everything in between. It showcases artists that have done art like this for most of their lives, and it gives you a glimpse of their artistic passions.I can even vouch for the specimen sheets and the practice instructions at the end of the book. Fowkes includes a few pages at the end explaining a technique of tracing fonts to understand their composition. At first, I was hesitant to try this because I thought it was redundant to copy another artist's font and trace the letters. Needless to say, I was surprised at how well it worked. Although tracing did not result in a great piece on its own, it gave me practice in lettering that I can now use to tweak fonts to become my own. I love doing this as a hobby, the art of lettering will continue to interest me for a long time, and this book is a great place for inspiration, beautiful artwork, and a little fun. This book is definitely worth the price, and anyone interested in any form of lettering should pick it up.

Perfect book for inspiration and learning
A well produced and illustrated book, giving a great insight into the world of type. I was looking for a book to inspire me to start creating my own hand drawn fonts. This book is perfect for what I need. It has a section which is just aimed to inspire. The second part of the book is a tutorial in creating and understanding type, with a selection of type sheets for you to trace to learn the basic. but, as stated throughout the book, Alex Fowkes wants you find your own path into the world of illustrating type, not just copy whats already been done.
