Interferons (IFNs) are low molecular weight proteins that belong to the class of glycoproteins known as cytokines. Interferons are part of the non-specific immune system and are an important first line of defense against viral infections. Interferon-alpha (IFN-?), also known as leukocyte interferon, represents a group of related but distinct proteins that share over 95% amino acid sequence homology. IFN-? 2b belongs to the type I family of Interferons, whose main functions include acting as antiviral agents and fighting tumors. IFN-? 2b is a lymphoid factor that possesses potent anti-viral activity. Human IFN-? 2b expressed in E. coli is a 19.3 kDa protein containing 165 amino acid residues.
