2 Black Heritage Series Puzzles. Each 24-pc puzzle depicts a African American inventor, Elijiah McCoy and Madame C.J. Walker. Sarah Breedlove was born on a plantation in Delta, LA. Her parents were ex-slaves. Orphaned at the age of six and was raised by an older sister, she had no formal education. Married at fourteen to Mr. Walker but widowed by twenty. She moved to live with her daughter in St. Louis. For 18 years, they supported themselves as washer women. In St. Louis, Sarah began thinking about hair products and began developing and inventing products. She marketed her product line door-to-door by adding the word Madame. She became known as Madame C.J. Walker and her products were instant successes. The Walker Manufacturing Company soon hired hundreds of women to sell her products door-to-door. She created jobs for many African American women. She was the first, self-made woman millionaire, of any color, in the United States. Elijah McCoy born in 1843. His parents were runaway slaves who used the Underground Railroad to escape from the South. As a teenager, Elijah dreamt of becoming a mechanical engineer. So, at the age of 15 his parents sent him to Scotland where he studied. He returned to the US but unable to find work but was offered a locomotive fireman job. Elijah McCoy was very smart and never stopped thinking. He was a trained mechanical engineer who saw a problem and looked for solutions. In 1872, Elijah McCoy received a patent for his lubricating device. His "lubricating cup" became essential to industries throughout the world. Companies that owned this cup were said to have "the real McCoy"
