I do not think that you can fit "thin XL T-shirt pair of thin socks and thin underwear into one of these bags". While they are completely sealed, they are not completely waterproof by any means. The zipper has 1/4" material exposed on either side. So liquid could seep out. Also one side is clear while the other side is more opaque.

Because there is 1/4" of fabric on either side of the zipper, there is the chance of seepage.

Q: Is there a 'rip stop' (metal or plastic) at the base of the zipper? Zippers without it don't last long.

No metal stop. There is simply a sewn stitch at both ends of the zipper. I have had mind for some time now and haven't had a problem, but they do not receive heavy use.
