Not the original author? Not necessarily a bad thing!
When Margaret Truman died, I thought, "That's it!" no more "Capital Crimes" stories. So, thinking that "Murder Inside the Beltway", her last book, I was disappointed in thinking that the "Capital Crimes" series, did not end with my favorite characters, Mackenzie Smith and his wife. In fact, I felt the story rather a dark and depressing one. So, how "surprised" and "pleased" I was when "Monument to Murder" came out. Not only did it bring back my favorite characters, it was in my opinion, written well. Again, I thought, that will definitely be the last book. But surprise again, "Experiment to Murder" has come out! Again, a well written book. Which, in fact, kept my attention through the night, when I started it and "finished" it. Now, I am not the kind of person who waste her time, "scrutinizing" and "nit-picking", the differences in the "writing technique" of the original author, of an original series, and the current "new" author. If it is a "good read",I just sit back and enjoy them! Margaret Truman may have arranged before she died, for her stories to continue. Or,if it is her family, or those in charge of developing and publishing, " The Capital Crimes Series", I for one, am thrilled. So, who ever you are, or what ever the case, I say, "Thank you!"

Liked but did not like ending
I thought the book was well written but basically I like good guys win bad guys g e t their just dessert, basically this book was just the opposite all the bad guys won and the good lost. The plot was good, and the good guys likeable. The bad guys really made you hope they would be foiled and be brought to justice, which they should have been for committing the crimes they did, not only against the individuals in the book but crimes against society as a whole.

Miss Mac and Annabelle, Otherwise a Good Tale of Political Intrigue

He has as deft a hand in weaving the story and this one in which a psychiatrist programs an assassin to murder a Presidential aspirant is riveting. The possibility of this type of programming is frightening and the possibility that the CIA would do such a thing is horrifying. And yet......My one complaint is that Margaret's hero and heroine, if those are the correct descriptions are practically non-existent in the plot. Mac and Annabelle Smith only appear a few times and really could have been left out completely without any harm to the story. That is unfortunate, since they are a major reason that I've read all of the series.

View all my reviews

Disappointed some characters were built up so much and not ...
It held my attention. Not a book I will read again, it just wasnt one that I want to read again. Disappointed some characters were built up so much and not really utilized very well in the story line. I saw afterward that this was not done by the original author which explained some of the different feel the book had.

Not Margaret Truman as author but Donald Bain, a very good substitute
A good read; Donald Bain knew Margaret Truman and had permission to use some of her material to expand on her Capital Crimes series. The book is good; however, Donald Bain is no longer with us either! A good read about a D.C. psychiatrist who is killed by a hit and run; but the book reveals it is a planned murder. /There is CIA involvement but not necessarily the good kind either. Interesting novel.

It's not Truman's Writing, it's Bain's
The writing's not the same as Truman's other books, because she didn't write it--Donald Bain did. I think this is clear on the jacket & readers shouldn't expect the same thing. I would have liked to have seen Mac's role in the book(s) expanded and more true to Truman's characterization, but I think Bain has done a very good job of picking up where Truman left off when she died. I recommend his books.

Worst book I've read in years!
I used to read and enjoy all of Margaret Truman's books. It wasn't until this week that I even knew Donald Bain had continued the series after her death. What a disappointment. I'm embarrassed for her family/estate that they have approved this mess. The entire premise is ridiculous and the book goes on and on and on with unneeded details. In fact, I found myself skimming through pages at a time because it was so boring. When I finally finished this mess of a story, I was shocked to find there's no real resolution to the mystery; it's as if Mr. Bain had to make up some type of ending. Maybe Mr. Bain is better ghost-writing with non-existent authors such as Jessica Fletcher. I'll never know because I'll never read another of his books.

Margaret Truman's Experiment in Murder
I don't care for this book. I don't like the concept of hypnotizing individuals to kill people. I am only half-way through the book, but it's one I am not inclined to get back to as I am with most other books I have been reading.I have read a few of Margaret Truman's books which I thoroughly enjoyed. This is not one of them.
