Good but a little too scary at times
My daughter's review: I gave this book four stars because it is TOTALLY NOT like the other books. It was scary in the middle. The other Stella Batts are good books. This book was happy at first. Then when you get in the middle of the book, it gets scary. Then at the end, it gets explained. All I recommend about THIS PARTICULAR BOOK is NOT to read this book at night. REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY looking forward for book number ten!!!!

This is a fun, zany mystery of Stella Batts and the stranger in the library that will wow the reader ...
There was only one thing better than having parents who owned Batts Confections and that was winning a secret contest! Stella Batts and everyone else in Mrs. Finkel’s class has any idea they had entered a contest, let alone won one. The whole class had won the Somers Elementary School Library Sleepover because they’d “checked out more books than anyone had. Stella and her best friend ever were going to wear matching pajamas to the sleepover. Well, not exactly pajamas, but leggings. Loud Lucy would later remind Stella about the fact that she’d seen them wear them last week.It was totally exciting and Stella had to gather up all the things she’d need to take with her. “It’s not fair!” her little sister, Penny, shouted. It was too and she was too busy to bother with Penny and her “pouty face.” Stella was getting ready to pack up her “princess hand mirror” when all of a sudden Penny grabbed it. CRASH! That was the end of her princess hand mirror, but the start of something terrible! “Oooh,” Penny exclaimed, “Now you get seven years of bad luck.” Was that just some old superstition Bruce told Penny or was Stella going to be in for it?Stella and everyone soon were at the library to have some fun at that sleepover. Mr. Ramos, the librarian, would be there and was soon setting up some Ground Rules. But wait, everyone wasn’t there! For some reason Evie wasn’t there, but the “biggest meanie in [their] class” was. Of course that was Joshua and he started right in bothering her. “Hey Smella,” he began, “Ghosts are real and I can prove it.” Was this the start of that seven years of bad luck? The fun and games started with a scavenger hunt, but Stella found something rather spooky in her search.Maybe there was a library ghost after all because when she went to find an old book in her search she found a book, “My Missing Friend.” It was written by none other that Stella B. in 1933. Mr. Ramos wanted her to read it, but even the first page began to freak her out. Things weren’t getting any better during the sleepover and Stella was positive that her seven years of bad luck had begun. “And my question is,” Joshua ask the Quija Board, “Are there any ghosts in here?” It didn’t take long for Stella to figure out the answer to that one when she saw something very, very spooky ...This is a fun, zany mystery of Stella Batts and the stranger in the library that will wow the reader. Of course there was something very strange going on in that library, but no, it wasn’t just a case of bad luck. I’ve only read a couple of Stella Batts books in the series, which now numbers nine. Stella is a feisty, fun character who is quite easy to fall in love with. The eight-year-old is quite imaginative, in a very charming, humorous sort of way. The broken mirror is a big crisis and, of course, Stella is certain it spells gloom and doom in her life. I’ve already fallen in love with the character and wouldn’t mind reading the others. The two I have read could be stand-alone, but it’s always nice to meet the rest of the characters. If you have a young reader with a great imagination, they too will fall in love with Stella!STELLA BATTS: Stella Batts Needs a New Name Stella Batts Hair Today Gone Tomorrow Stella Batts Pardon Me Stella Batts A Case of the Meanies Stella Batts Who’s in Charge Stella Batts Something Blue Stella Batts None of Your Beeswax Stella Batts Superstar Stella Batts Scaredy Cat This book courtesy of the publisher.

A Sleepover Delight!
Stella Batts has been a favorite character in our household for a long time. I have three kids, and I started to read the series with my oldest. Now my little guys is enjoying them. The latest one was perfect for him because there was finally a boy featured on the cover. (While the content of the series is good for all genders, he's getting to the age where he doesn't always like to read books that look like "girl books.") The the spooky setting gave him just enough of a shiver to keep him on the edge of his seat. Stella and her classmates get to sleep over in the library because they read the most books out of any other class in school. (As a mom, I liked the detail of how reading comes with all sorts of unexpected rewards.) While Stella and her crew are super excited for the sleepover, a number of unexpected things happen, including the appearance of something that may or may not be a ghost. Stella's sometimes-foil, Joshua, helps her in this latest installment. We love Stella Batts and hope there will be a book 10!

Two chapters in before I regretted it...
We found the first, second, and third Stella Batts books at the library, and started reading it with our 4 year old. It was a hit (though not as much so as our absolute favorites, the Clementine and Waylon series’, as well as Anna Hibiscus, which we read and listen to over and over). I bought the remaining books in the Stella series since our library didn’t have those, and they’ve all been ok until this one. I really wish I’d read the reviews for each individual book now. I never would’ve purchased this one had I known. At the first mention of the ouija board I hesitated, and edited a bit before reading it aloud. After skimming through the rest of the book I can tell it’s going to be a large part of the story. I won’t be able to gloss over and make it appropriate for my child, who hates all things spooky anyway, so we will have to skip to the last book.
