My daughter is closer to a size 7 and it fits her well, but when she bent over it rose kind of high, so she will definitely be wearing shorts or leggings under it. So if she is taller than 48 inches, it may be too short for her. And may need one size bigger. Good luck!

I ordered a L for my daughter who wears a size 8/10. It fit her perfectly. The costume does run short on the sides, due to the V-cut front/back. So it would depend upon the size your 5 yr old wears. I would think the M would be size 6/8 and the small would be size 5T/4 in girls sizes.

I bought a small for a 40 pound, 4 foot child, not sure it this helps any, but it was a tiny bit big on her in length, but not enough to matter.
