Treasures of Black Cinema, Vol. 1

I enjoyed all of these movies. A couple were the best copies available,though chopped up in parts. This character actor, Mantan Moreland,is a favorite of mine.Cheap laughs, and Mantan's humor, is important in Black Cinema history!Mantan is in one of the featured films.

Richard Roundtree said that between 1900 and 1950, 500 "race films" were made for African-American audiences before "Brown v. Board of Ed." or the Montgomery bus boycott. Only a few of them survive and this DVD gives 4 examples. There are 2 films on each side and I really think they could have put all of them on one side.Two clich'es fit these movies: "so bad, it's good" and "good for its time." There were fight scenes where you hear the sound of a punch, but you don't see it happening. You see men walk through a broken window, but you don't see it smashed probably because they couldn't pay for it or do it in one shot. Remember in "Multifacial," when a director told Vin Diesel's character, "You may be part Black, but your Blackness doesn't read on film."? Well, there are people here, due to the black-and-white filming, who look white, but aren't being that it's an all-Black cast. Some viewers may not be able to handle all the amateurish filming and plot.Still, this was good for its time. This gave me an idea of what my late grandparents would have considered entertaining more than 50 years ago. I'm glad African Americans have these few films to remember for historical purposes. Since white Hollywood wanted to exclude Blacks or only show them in demeaning and peripheral roles, Black folk maybe movies for themselves and by themselves, skills be darned!Though everyone else hates it, I love "Alien 3." You can tell that the alien was just computer-generated. However, CGI was in its infancy in the early 1990s. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on one aspect in order to appreciate the totality of the film. Here too, these works are not high-quality, but they gave Black audiences generations ago a way to see themselves on the screen without being oppressed.There are many critics, both anti-racist and racist, who have dogged rap. But the longstanding success of rap has significance. The way the genre speaks to suburban kids and ghetto kids means something crucial. These films similarly can be condemned, but they should be appreciated for what they did at the time.Some may want to watch this alongside the documentary "Black Southern Cinema." Grandparents may want to watch it with their grandchildren. This may even be a good way for college courses on Black cinema to begin.

黒人映画の父と言われるオスカー・ミショー(彼に関する評伝としては、パトリック・マクギリガンの『 Oscar Micheaux: The Great and Only: The Life of America's First Black Filmmaker 』が優れている)の作品を始め、「黒人の黒人による黒人のため」の、黒人映画(いわゆる"Race Films”)は、映画草創期(1910年代)から作られていたことはよく知られている。しかし、1929年に、MGMでオール黒人劇『 ハレルヤ [DVD ]』が作られたことで、ハリウッドが、黒人の観客層を取り込み、その後、純粋な黒人映画の製作本数は急速に減少して行くことになる。本DVDは、そんな時期に作られた黒人映画4本を1枚のディスクに収めたもの(両面1層仕様で、片面に2本ずつ収録)。ただし、"Up in the Air"は、モノグラムという弱小会社とはいえ、ハリウッド製の作品なので、厳密に言うと、黒人映画は3本ということになるだろう。作品前の解説は、『 黒いジャガー [DVD ]』でお馴染みの、リチャード・ラウンドトゥリーが担当している。すべて日本劇場未公開。●"The Devil’s Daughter"(1939)ジャマイカのバナナ農園を舞台にした姉妹の愛憎劇。ジャマイカということで、オービア(ヴードゥーのようなアフリカの原始的信仰)の生贄儀式などおどろおどろしい場面を効果的に使った作品。呪術を使う姉に扮しているのは、『ハレルヤ』や『 Pinky [VHS] [Import ]』にも出ているニナ・メイ・マッキニーで、儀式のシーンでの呪術はさすがの貫禄。作品全体としては何ともノンビリしていて、俳優に当てる照明(レフ板？)がまだらになっていたり、マイクの影が写っていたり…というような技術的お粗末さも垣間見えるのはご愛嬌。●"Gang War" (1940)ジューク・ボックスの利権を巡って争う2つのギャング組織を描いた作品。シマの頂点にまで上りつめた主人公が悲惨な最期を迎えるという、『 ジェームズ・キャグニーの民衆の敵 特別版 [DVD ]』や『 犯罪王リコ 特別版 [DVD ]』のような、ハリウッドで量産されたギャング作品のストーリーをそのまま踏襲している作品。60分弱の短さということもあるが、スピーディな演出と編集で、実にソツなくまとまっている。●"The Bronze Buckaroo" (1939)友人ジョーからの手紙を頼りに、牧場を手伝いにやって来たボブ率いる一団。ところがジョーが行方不明だと知り、ボブは真相解明に乗り出す…という黒人のシンギング・カウボーイ、ハーブ・ジェフリーズ主演の西部劇。酒場の場面で、客全員が哀感たっぷりに歌い出したり、相手を"brother"や"uncle"と呼んだりするあたりは、さすが黒人西部劇という感じで、何とも奇妙で不思議な味わい。(ほぼ)オール黒人キャストの『 黒豹のバラード [VHS ]』の50年以上も前にこういった作品が作られていたことに驚く映画ファンも多いだろう。●"Up in the Air"(1940)ラジオ局のリハーサルで起きた殺人事件を解決しようとするボーイ、フランキー・ダロと雑用夫マンタン・モレランドの活躍を描いた、モノグラム社製のフーダニット喜劇。ジョン・フォードの『プリースト判事』などで有名なステピン・フェチット同様、モレランド(『 キャビン イン ザ スカイ [DVD ]』)が、大きな目玉を見開いて、白人から見た｢無教養で愚鈍な｣黒人像を演じているのが、正直、古臭いと感じなくもない。また、顔を黒塗りした(ミンストレル・ショーのように)ダロが、(白人からみた)黒人風の間の抜けた漫才をモレランドと演じる場面などもあるが、これなどは、さすがに今では差別的と捉えられるだろう。そういった意味では、良くも悪くも、当時のハリウッドの黒人観が如実に現れている作品だ。ただ、作品としては、それなりに楽しめる小品に仕上がっている。本DVDは、米Image Entertaimentが販売(Retromedia Entertainmentが発売元)しているもの。すでに存在しているヴィデオ・マスターを流用しているのだろう、どの作品も、キズ、コマ飛び、諧調の悪さなど、マイナス点ばかりが目につく画質だ。音声もノイズが多く、場面によってはセリフが良く聞き取れない有様。もっとも、現存する原版(35mmか16mm？)の状態が相当酷いと思うので、これは仕方がないだろう。英語字幕は、当然未収録。本DVDは、北米盤ながら、R-0(=All)なので、日本のR-2 プレーヤーで問題なく視聴可能。質的には満足出来ないものの、バラエティに富んだ黒人映画を廉価で手に入れられるということで、映画ファンには嬉しい1枚だ。 Oscar Micheaux: The Great and Only: The Life of America's First Black Filmmakerハレルヤ [DVD黒いジャガー [DVDPinky [VHS] [Importジェームズ・キャグニーの民衆の敵 特別版 [DVD犯罪王リコ 特別版 [DVD黒豹のバラード [VHSキャビン イン ザ スカイ [DVD
