Deep Diversity: Overcoming Us Vs. Them

Great investigation of an important topic
I love the way Choudhury ties the challenges around racism and other forms of prejudice to our biology and conditioning. The insights in this book would be useful for anyone hoping to overcome automatic responses to people based on apparent differences, whether racial, class, gender, education, income, nationality, religion--you name it. The basic mechanisms underlying prejudice are the same for all, and Choudhury offers tools for overcoming them that anyone can apply in personal or professional life.

I wholeheartedly recommend this as close reference book while doing the work ...
“Deep Diversity is a demystifying and moving and resource for the seasoned social justice educator as well as for any person interested in moving beyond a tolerance based approach towards racial justice. It is a transformational experience for the reader for how it coherently presents scientific evidence, a systems thinking analysis of structural racism as well as mindfulness and self care as much needed and interconnected foundations for authentic personal and social change from within. Shakil Choudhury role models the strength that comes from offering one’s own story as a powerful vehicle to talk-the-walk of racial justice with sound evidence. The book is even more generous by providing key elements of the method the author has been responsively adapting to multiple contexts across the world. I wholeheartedly recommend this as close reference book while doing the work as well as a compassionate reminder of the beauty of sharing our flawed stories as means to co-liberate the fullest potential of our shared humanity.”

Excellent synthesis of ideas about racism
If you read just one book about racism, this would be a good pick. It is not a difficult read despite the complexity of ideas. It synthesizes social science and neuroscience research for learning and understanding with practical suggestions for self-improvement. Fabulous book!

and ideologies came together in their disgust of this book
My columns are will with cuss words and angry messages to the ignorance of this author. I think despite me hating this book I have learned a lot of things, the most important: a myriad of races, genders, and ideologies came together in their disgust of this book, and that is beautiful.

Awesome insights and learning
I met Shakil, the author, a couple years ago. I’ve been intending to read this book since then, and even attended the book launch and got signed copy. It’s taken me his long to get to it.Shakil's writing is personal, insightful, informative, academic, researched, and practical. This book is worth the time to read it. I highlighted something on every other page, easily, and will go back to the information again. He writes about diversity, but the learning is applicable to all areas of our lives, especially, for me, the reality of 'implicit bias'. If diversity education is something that interests you, this book is a great resource.

At last, a practical, easy-to-read and inspiring guide about diversity.
I have been teaching diversity, gender and social justice classes to law enforcement students. Deep Diversity is the first text in years that has allowed my students to side-step being defensive when learning about privilege and power and instead genuinely TALK and LISTEN to each other about issues related to dominant and minority cultures and dynamics.I am delighted to offer this text that supports learners on every level -- cognitively, emotionally and socially -- and invites them to understand themselves and their communities at a deeper level. Finally I can teach from a text that inspires and invites learners to step up and be a social-justice-change-makers in their personal, educational, work, and community circles.Choudhury teaches through humble story-telling using common sense and clear prose. His book is enriching and immensely practical. I recommend it highly for anyone who wants to learn -- or teach -- about diversity. Well done!

I have used this book in university level courses that I teach and students have loved it. Reading it together as a class sparked many thoughtful and engaging discussions as well as deep self-reflection from students. As an educator it is one of the few resources I have found that allowed critical dialogue to take place about diversity and power alongside an awareness of emotions and personal beliefs. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to facilitate deep learning about diversity in their classroom.

Excellent and Thought provoking
Deep Diversity is an excellent and thought provoking book on an important and complex topic. It is contains practical examples that illustrate the issues and areas covered. It is well written and understandable. It also contains many surprises about how and why we behave as we do when dealing with diversity issues. The author’s experience and depth of knowledge in the field are clear. We can learn a lot from reading this book and I highly recommend doing so.

I loved the writing style
The author has an unique way of explaining the concepts of diversity, inclusiveness, biases, power and privilege. His framework makes sense. I appreciated that it also has a Canadian perspective and that it's loaded with tangible, simple actions that I can do right away to disrupt my own automatic ways of thinking and behaving.
