Tamil Tigress: My Story As a Child Soldier in Sri Lanka's Bloody Civil War

Eye opening and really disturbing
Event hough I come from a Sri Lankan jaffna Tamil background myself I was not exposed to the things that niromi had to go through because my family chose to live in the south of Sri lanka and later leave the country like many more. However after reading the book I can understand why anyone would want to enlist themselves in an armed group like the LTTE and likewise also would want to leave the group in the end. Violence is not the answer to violence. I think that was the conclusion niromi derived from her experience. And i agree with her. there's still ongoing struggles for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka. Not much had improved in terms of equality for the tamils. But I hope that will change in the years ahead.

Tamil Tigress - a review
Its a well written book with a story that is of great importance to me. I was on the other side looking in as a Sinhalese living i the country . Niromis book is well written and she tells the story without taking sides . It gives an insight in to a movement shrouded in secrecy and now gone form the face of the earth (thankfully) . Its also a personal story of a young woman growing up , She does expose the brutality of war and also the brutality of the group she joined . She does mention some of the important characters of the Sri Lankan conflict like Prabakaran and Mahattaya . Mahattaya is actually a Sinhala name and apparently this man got as his nickname when a Sinhala family who he and his group was murdering called him Mahattaya (which closely converts to Sir ) and begged him not to kill the family .Niromi is obviously one of the lucky ones who was able to get away in the nick of time and live to be able to tell her story . I feel she sullies her good work in the last section by trying to paint in a broad brush about the events that took place after she left the midst .Even with that gripe I have to say it is a well written imminently readable book that gives a good back ground to the Conflict in Sri Lanka.

Tamil Tigress
Well written, easily read and strikes at the heart of most Tamils - no glorifications and flag waving, but an honest account of a singular experience.. Singular?

Gripping subject and great writing!
Despite all the controversy this book and especially its author has attracted, I am absolutely glad that I picked up this book as one of my reads this week. I think it is certainly a first: when an ex-LTTE fighter decides to writes honestly about the reason why she decided to become a rebel and why she decided to leave. The book is interesting because of the interaction the author has with key rebel leadership while recounting the experiences of the rank and file. She also paints vivid images of 1980s Jaffna, the hardship faced by the civilian population, and the gnawing doubts she begins to have about not so much the end but the means to the end. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in the Sri Lankan story and wishes to understand it better in a different way - and the fact that it is actually quite well written is a definite bonus!

To remember...
In france, it was so rare to hear about the srilanka's war during 26 years. Even at the end in 2009. So, this book remember us what was this bloody war whith so many simple men and women who has fighted for their freedom. Only for their freedom. For the memory of all the "Maavirar", hero in tamil, read this book. And for the others who didn't live this war, take this book to discover and understand why there are so many tamils from Sri lanka all around the world...
