From the Late Middle Ages through the Victorian Era, the courting candle was used to time the length of time a young man was allowed to court a young lady. When the candle flame reached the metal, the date was over. If the parents approved of the young man, the candle was raised & the date was lengthened. If they did not approve, the candle was lowered. This served as a quiet but firm reminder of expected decorum. This courting candle is hand forged from 1/4" round steel stock. The candle rest is fashioned from hardwood dowels with a small candle spike in the center of the large dowel. *Please note: Each courting candle is hand crafted. There will be variations from the image show in the handle.
