Q: Are the ends square or round?

The ends of the rod are square the part that you see that is round retracts and is what allows you to place it into an already existing permanent rod end. I bought one in 2013 and used it is a tile shower area. The tile rod holders were permanent. The ends push in and allow you to install. It worked perfectly and is still in place today

Q: I need a 30 inch square towel bar, would this work?

Yes, just cut it down to size with a fine toothed hacksaw. I recommend to cut it a little longer than your measurement and try a fit. It's much, much easier to cut a little more off that to add a little more on! Also, I strengthed mine by inserting a tight-fitting piece of aluminum tubing inside the bar once I had the right length.

The retractable part slips off so that you could shorten the rod and I guess you could insert wood or metal to make it stronger but that is something we did not feel was needed. It is not necessarily strong but it is only going to hold a towel. I would not suggest using it as a grab bar or hanging from it.
