An Amazing Microscope Value
While browsing Amazon for a reasonably priced computer microscope, I noticed a link to a Youtube video of an Australian man named "Dave" reviewing two "cheap" computer microscopes" (EEVblog #566 - Cheap USB Microscope Reviews.)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2P1_JZYnVcThe Youtube video showed Dave first demonstrating a cheaper computer microscope, which he didn't like at all, but he certainly had much praise for the second microscope, an "endoscope" type, built by Andonstar. He liked the way it was built, with its solid metal plate at the bottom, and the sturdy metal tubing which allowed the camera to be manipulated into various angles and lengths. Adjusting the focus was another very impressive feature, accomplished by twisting either or both of two locations on the device. Although I kept looking for him to add the camera itself, it turned out that the camera was at the end of the long vertical "endoscope type" tube, and also contained the lights for lighting up the subject matter. This was a prime example of successful miniaturization. When he then demonstrated the magnification of a small printed circuit board, I was blown away by the sharpness and clarity of the picture, plus the options in the size of the magnification (just by raising and lowering the camera tube), and screen resolution options in the software. I ordered it immediately, but - forgive me, Amazon - from eBay for $59.99. There was no shipping charge, and no sales tax, and I received it within one business day via USPS. It came in a small box unassembled, but I put it together in less than one and a half minutes. (There were only 4 pieces.)Although the software and PDF User Manual didn't come with the microscope, it was sent later that day after an email request to Andonstar Support, as suggested in a small card in the package. But in the meantime , in my anxiety to use the microscope, I downloaded a substitute camera program called "Yawcam" from the Internet which worked just fine. One interesting point is that Amazon has several different varieties of this Andonstar digital microscope for sale, some of which do not indicate the manufacturer's name of "Andonstar". Instead, they indicate different brand names, and at different prices. These "other" microscopes, which look exactly like the one I ordered from eBay, are ostensibly to be used for different purposes, such as examining your own teeth or ears or other body parts up close, or for quality control testing of a printed circuit board. This latter purpose was also the major part of the Youtube review, and it was effective and impressive. One of the customer reviews on Amazon indicated that it is difficult to determine the degree of magnification, since it is not indicated anywhere, either on the screen or on the device itself. (I think it goes from 10 to 800, but don't expect too much at the high magnifications.) This lack of knowing what magnification you are using may make a difference to those who are inspecting printed circuit boards, for example, but it certainly doesn't make any difference to myself. I get my kicks from viewing various cpu chips at different magnifications, and it is an especially gratifying hobby for me. This device enhances the experience profoundly.I am also very impressed by the simplicity and ease of use of the Andonstar, as well as the quality of the picture, and I have so far taken over 100 photos and videos of my chips and other subjects, all of which are beauties. The screenshots take up the whole screen, and are all from different magnifications and angles.Bottome line: For $60, this is the bargain of the year.
