In Bruges

As much as I love In Bruges, I didn't think it needed this 'special' edition, however, the fact that the entire script is included, published to perfection by Faber & Faber, this was worth getting the upgrade from DVD. Other extras on the Bluray I havent had a chance to look at but the two books included are cool. I think they could have added another extra though, like art cards (love those) or a poster.

second sight Have released a brilliant edition of one of my favourite films; not going to overdo it with a fanfare or proclamations of how this changed my life. But i liked this edition the new cover art is nice, like the special features and the booklet and screenplay are a nice addition; i would recommend it even if you have the standard blu ray. Brilliant film brilliant edition.

Very happy that Second Sight released this incredible film.

Awesome Box Set

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.  Deeply black in its humour. Layered with rich themes. Great actors at the top of their game. This movie has it all. The script is by far the lynchpin of this modern masterpiece. It puts all these odd situations in the hands of odder people and lets it unfold with a kind of nonchalent nature that feels almost pedestrian but hides a deeper through line that really resonates.I always marvel at how magnificently well put together this film is. Farrell and Gleeson are the perfect odd couple, endearing and grating at the same time.

Got the chance to see one of my favourite movies on the big screen in 35mm. ‘In Bruges’ follows to hit men: Ray (Colin Farrell) & Ken (Brendan Gleeson) who are sent to Bruges by their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) after a job goes wrong.Director Martin McDonagh is easily one of the best writers working within the comedic genre today (most recently with the excellent ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’) he hits the perfect balance of witty, razor sharp sarcastic humour and bleak dramatic cynicism, all covered in a layer of dark comedy. The humour here is gleefully offensive meaning no one is safe from the hilarious dialogue between the characters and aimed at the situation and location that they are in.Some comedies would come off cheap and nasty with this humour in some aspects, however McDonagh has written these characters so well coupled with the brilliant performances that are easily some of the best in the cast’s careers and I genuinely believe no one else could play them. Farrell plays the guilt-stricken Ray, who after accidentally killing a child on his first job is in the last place he wants to be. Farrell nails all aspects of Ray’s character, he’s childlike in what interests and amuses him e.g. completely uninterested in Bruges’ history and architecture, yet fascinated with a dwarf actor filming a project. His snarky and deadpan insults and complete hatred towards Bruges never grows old and is constantly funny, yet he also clearly is damaged and in a lot of pain from the accident and Farrell really delivers in these moments as well. He has great chemistry with Gleeson, the opposite of Ray’s character Ken is interested in the history of the town and just wants to see the sights. However like Ray also has a sharp sense of humour and seeing them bicker and argue are some of the film’s best moments. However Fiennes’ Harry steals each scene he’s in, he has a ferocious temper and psychopathic tendencies yet also follows a strict code and set of rules, it’s clear Fiennes is having a blast playing this role.The location of Bruges itself also feels like its own character. The way McDonagh shoots the film and utilises the lighting and cinematography for the architecture is very impressive and it’s clear just how much of a metaphor it is for ‘purgatory’ seeing our characters stuck there indefinitely thinking about their actions and consequences that have arisen from them. The music as well fits the tone perfectly, with the monotone yet catchy piano main theme, the haunting orchestral moments and the frantic punk edged guitars for the chase and fight sequences.‘In Bruges’ in my opinion has no problems whatsoever, it’s smart, wickedly funny, genuinely emotional and depressing all at once in one of the most original and fresh scripts ever filmed. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it yet.

This is in my top 10 of greatest films. The new August 2019 LIMITED EDITION (limited to how many?) brings the piece to top shelf. Martin, Colin and Brendan NEED to do another film. The chemistry was just perfect! But what are the other weird reviews here about 80's films? Something with Amazon is screwed up.
