Long handled shovel saves backs!
I'm 6'3" and shovels are typically painful to use as they are optimised for shorter people. I experimented here and bought the long handled version so that I could dig out the stumps of some old conifers without being all bent over -- superb! The upright posture while digging saved my back. The drainage ditch shovel has a narrow blade, perhaps 5" wide and over 12" long, and it's sharp at the end. This was perfect for digging tightly around the stumps, getting deep enough to expose the roots and then slicing them off 10-12" below the soil level with the sharp edge at the end (the rest of the roots can stay in, they'll rot away). The shaft flexed when I used the shovel as a pry bar under the roots, not in an alarming way, it felt like I was getting feedback on the force used. The hand grip is good with both a round grip section and a flat plane on the end for driving into the dirt.Thank you Roughneck, I'll be coming back for other tools when I need them in the future.
