A package of 5 1 inch (25 mm) 440C stainless steel balls. Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. 440C stainless steel is the highest carbon content from 400 stainless steel series. It is usually heat treated to reach hardness of 58–60 HRC. It is a bearing steel, and used in rolling contact stainless bearings, e.g. ball and roller bearings. it is also used to make knife blades. It has a carbon content of 0.95–1.20%, chromium content of 16.00–18.00%, molybdenum content of 0.75%, Manganese content of 1.0%, and silicon content of 1.0% 440C Stainless Steel has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media. Grade 440C is capable of attaining, after heat treatment, the highest strength, hardness and wear resistance of all the stainless alloys. Its very high carbon content is responsible for these characteristics, which make 440C particularly suited to such applications as ball bearings and valve parts. 440C is used for bearings, nozzles, wear parts of pumps, mold inserts, knives, surgical tools, etc. 440C is used for severe service such as valves, needle valves, balls and seats for check valves and ball bearings. 440C resists scaling up to 1200 degrees F in continuous service and resists corrosion from fresh water steam, crude oil, gasoline, and resists staining from fruit and food acids. Maximum resistance is obtained by hardening and polishing.
