Does this model measure to 1/16" ? we need that instead of 1/32" (we bought a new d2 only to discover it no longer measures to 1/16! grumble

Yes, it will allow the units to read to the nearest 1/16".

Can you change the measurement reference point from the back edge to the front?

Yes. One of the control buttons toggles measuring references once the measure function has been activated. Page 2 of the owner's manual locates this button.

Does this X3 allow measurements to the nearest 1/8"?

I have the X4, which is the same laser. The X4 has the camera, where the X3 does not. On my X4, it will measure to 1/8", BUT you have to make sure you purchase the US version. Also note, that it will display oddly... it will say 2/8" instead of 1/4", or 4/8" instead of 1/2". It's annoying, but you get used to it. Hope this helps!

Does this have a tripod port and timer?

yes to the tripod port. There is a timer function shown on the quick "cheat sheet' but I have no idea how to use it. This is a great product!
