Classic chess derives its name from two Persian words, "check" and "mate," meaning master of death. The home of chess is India, where in the fifth century, there appeared a predecessor of chess: chaturanga. Chess appeared in Russia in the ninth and tenth centuries. The beloved game goes by different names in different countries: In England and America it is chess, in Spain it is el axadrez, in Germany it is schach, and in France it is echecs.
